BW Wrestlers Compete at the Ashland Open

ASHALND, Ohio --- Select members of the Baldwin Wallace University team competed at the unscored Ashland Open on Sherrill Hudson Court in the Kates Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore 285-pounder Andrew Shackleford (Worthington/Thomas Worthington) who won the individual title.   Shackelford had a first round bye then pinned Miguel Staples of Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.).  He the posted a 3-1 decision against Zachary Wood of Lake Erie and won the title with a 4-0 decision against.  Kyle O'Donnell of Ohio University.

Freshman 174-pounder James Ritchie (Carlisle) took second in his weight class.   Ritchie won his first match by medical forfeit.  After suffering a loss, he received a bye to finish second.

Freshman 125-pounder Chris Doyle (Uniontown/Green), sophomore 141-pounder Patt McGinnis (Egg Harbor City, N.J. / Cedar Creek), freshman 165-pounder Kaegan Pearsall (Moretown, Vt. /Harwood Union) and freshman 285-pounder Andrew Sierawksi (Delaware / Hayes) all finished in third place.

Doyle won his first match by default.   After suffering a loss, he then posted a 15-9 decision against Luke Nance of Ohio University and then suffered an injury in his last match to place third.

McGinnis won his first match with a 4-1 decision against Andrew Frey, lost his second and third matches, defeated teammate and sophomore Zack Taylor (Brunswick) with a medical forfeit to place third.

Pearsall won his first match with a 4-0 decision against Brad Potter of Ashland.  After suffering a loss, he pinned Cody Eggers of Wheeling Jesuit in 2:40 and won a 5-1 decision against Brad Potter.

Sierawksi lost his opening match then he received a bye.   Sierawksi pinned Brian Lipps of Merychurst (Pa.) University in 3:30, pinned Staples in 39 seconds, won an 8-5 decision against Devin King of Ohio University and pinned Austin Little in 1:06.

Placing fourth were freshman 133-pounder Reggie Lowery (Shaker Heights), Taylor, sophomore 149-pounder Seamus Bermingham (Orchard Park, N.Y) and sophomore 197-pounder Tyler Keating (Fairview Park/Fairview).

Lowery received a first round bye, suffered a loss, pinned Brad Kakos of Wheeling Jesuit in 4:30 and lost his final match.

Taylor won his first match with a 3-0 decision against Robert Mason, and then won an 11-0 major decision against Frey before ending his day with the medical forfeit against McGinnis.

Bermingham won his first match with a 10-8 decision against Mason Calvert of Ashland, lost his second match, beat teammate and freshman Grant Rathburn (New Albany / Columbus Bishop Hartley) with a medical forfeit and lost his final match.

Keating received a first round bye, lost his second match, received a bye and lost his third and final match.

Rathburn lost his opening match, won a 17-1 technical fall against Jonathan Barrett of Wheeling Jesuit, lost to Bermingham, and won an 8-6 decision against Calvert in his final match.

BW is back in action on Tuesday, February 17 when it travels to Tiffin to close out the regular season and Ohio Athletic Conference schedule against Heidelberg University in the Seiberling Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
