Volleyball Beats Case Western Reserve in Straight Sets

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team won in straight sets against cross-town rival Case Western Reserve in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (14-1), who has won its last six matches, earned the victory by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-20. Case Western Reserve (12-2) snapped a four-match winning streak and now has a record of 2-2 against Ohio Athletic Conference opponents
 

Senior middle hitter Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) and sophomore All-OAC outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk) led the offensive attack with a match-high tying 11 kills each.  Scruggs had an .529 hitting percentage.   Junior outside hitter Ellen Hawkins (Worthington/Thomas Worthington), who is this week's OAC Player of the Week, tallied 10 kills.  Junior middle hitter Jordan Diels (Paris/Minerva) contributed a career-best tying nine kills and hit a match high 72 percent.

Freshman setter Shannon Ott (Milan/Edison) set up the offense with match-high 39 assists.

Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC libero Arlayna Newcomer (Norwalk/St. Paul) anchored the defense with a match-best 17 digs.   Lortcher added 14 digs while Scruggs and Hawkins each contributed two blocks. 

The Yellow Jackets close out regular season tournament action this Friday and Saturday, September 23-24 when they travel to Hanover, Indianan to compete in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) and OAC Crossover hosted by Hanover College.   BW will face Transylvania (Ky.) University and Bluffton College on Saturday then will face Hanover and the College of Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.
