BEREA, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University volleyball team won its second straight tournament title as it was co-champions along with Case Western Reserve University at the 17th Annual Marcia French Memorial Invitational in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
BW (9-1), who won their ninth straight match, was the co-champions along with Case Western Reserve after the set-tie breaker could not be broken as both the Yellow Jackets and Spartans won all 12 of their sets for a perfect 4-0 record.
BW opened the final day with a three-set victory against Buffalo State (N.Y.) University by scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-1. The Yellow Jackets ended the invitational with a three-set victory against Thiel (Pa.) College by scores of 25-22, 25-15 and 25-15.
The BW offense was led by freshman outside hitter Alicia Lortcher (Norwalk), who was named to the all-tournament team, with 29 kills, including a career-high 17 against Buffalo State. Freshman outside hitter Morgan Thomas (Northfield/Nordonia) tallied 25 kills, including a career-best 17 against Thiel.
Freshman setter Ashley Nuding (Perrysburg /Springfield) set up the offense with 73 assists.
Freshman libero Brittany Miner (Canton/Massillon Perry) anchored the defense with 37 digs. Lortcher contributed 30 digs, including a career-high 20 against Thiel.
In addition, junior middle hitter Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) had 11 kills, five digs and four blocks. Freshman utility player Jordan Diels (Paris/Minerva) had seven kills, one dig and six blocks.
BW is back in action on Monday, September 14 when it travels to Steubenville for a non-conference match against Franciscan University at 7 p.m.
