Jackets Win a Pair of Matches on Day One of Marcia French Memorial Invitational

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College volleyball team won a pair of matches today (Friday, September 10, 2010) on the first day of the Marcia French Invitational Tournament in Berea, Ohio.  The Yellow Jackets are now 7-2 overall and play a pair of matches tomorrow morning (Sept. 11) against Earlham (Ind.) College at 10:00 a.m. and Oberlin College at 1:00 p.m.

In today's first match versus Franciscan, B-W won 3-1, by scores of 24-26, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-13. The Yellow Jackets finished the first day of the tournament with a 3-2 victory against the College of Wooster in the nightcap and by the scores of 25-13, 24-26, 22-25, 25-20, and 15-11. B-W is now 3-0 in five-set matches, two of which took place last weekend at the Kalamazoo (Mich.) tournament. Fans can follow all of the action at the tournament website: http://www.bw.edu/athletics/vb/sched/marciafrench_2010/

Against Franciscan on the front line, freshman middle hitter Colleen Bonacci (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) led the way with eight kills and two blocks. Sophomore middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton / Holy Name) had seven kills and two blocks as well.  Offensively, sophomore setter Jessica Stitts (Eastlake/North) had 21 set assists, while senior setter Casey Passen (Ashville/Teays Valley) had 14. Defensively, sophomore libero Natalie Emmons (Ashland/ Senior) had 32 digs and junior outside hitter Chelsea Nissen (Williston / Genoa) also marked 16 digs.

In the win versus Wooster, Bonacci paced the squad with 14 kills. Joining her offensively in double figures kills was Nissen with 12 and 32 digs, while Switalski had 11 kills and six blocks, and freshman Shannon Deleur (Olmsted Falls) also had 11 kills.  Stitts had 27 assists and Passen had 18. Defensively, Emmons again led the way with 33 digs.

Following its two matches tomorrow, the Yellow Jackets will remain at home and be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 15 when they host Case Western Reserve in Berea, Ohio at 7:00 p.m.  Next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 17-18, B-W will travel to Salisbury, Maryland, to play in the Salisbury Seagull Classic tournament. Matches on Friday are at 5:00 versus Gallaudet University and at 7:00 p.m. versus Salisbury (Md.).  On Saturday, B-W plays at 10:00 a.m. against Eastern (Pa.) College and at 12:00 noon versus an opponent yet to be determined.
