Women’s Tennis Closes Out Fall Schedule at Oberlin Invitational

OBERLIN, Ohio -- The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team closed out the fall portion of its schedule as it competed last weekend at the Oberlin College Invitational on the Don Hunsinger Tennis Courts. 

BW (1-1) was led in singles action by freshman Sydney Bergman as she remained undefeated on the season with three victories   Bergman, who is a perfect 5-0, defeated Sarah Casey of Allegheny (Pa.) College in the first round by identical scores of 6-1.   She won her second round match against Morgan Wagers of the College Wooster by scores of 6-1 and 6-2.   Bergman closed out the invitational by defeating Shannon Sertz of Wooster by identical scores of 6-0.   

In addition, junior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference player Kayla Eeg (Waterford, Pa. / General McLane) and junior Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood), sophomore All-OAC player Imani Robinson (Cincinnati / School for Creative & Performing Arts) and freshman Liz Radkiewicz (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) all won a pair of matches.  Senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC player Claire Watts (Medina/Highland), junior Kelly Peskura (Strongsville), sophomore Kathleen Moser (Strongsville) and freshman Hailey Kaylor (Medina) each earned a victory.

In doubles action, the teams of Bergman and Robinson and senior Hayley Geronimo (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Finkenthal led the Yellow Jackets with three victories each.  Also, the team of Watts and Moser won two doubles matches. 

Bergman and Robinson, who improved to 4-1 on the season, defeated Megan Yates and Sophie Allen of Otterbein University in the opening round by a score of 8-2.  The duo then knocked off Rylie Markle and Sophia Navas Davis of Otterbein in the second round by a score of 8-4.  The tandem ended the invitational with an 8-3 victory against Amanda Rees Liere and Gabby DeLeon of Allegheny.

Geronimo and Finkenthal won their opening match with an 8-5 victory against McKenna Griffith and Jacey Higbie of Ohio Northern University.   The team then beat Allie Gales and Jillian Goulet of Heidelberg University by a score of 8-2 in the second round.   The duo closed out the invitational with an 805 victory against Carolina Luchini and Dora Mase of Wooster.

 

BW opens the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday, February 11 with a road match against Oberlin College inside the Heisman Fieldhouse at 10 am.  The Yellow Jackets will also face Wooster in its final match before its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina on Saturday, February 18 inside the Scot Center.
