WEST LAFAYETTE, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University men's golf team stands tied for second of nine teams today (Friday, April 29, 2011) after the first day of the three-day and 54-hole Ohio Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at the River Greens Golf Club. Muskingum University is seving as the host institution. The second round takes place tomorrow, Saturday, April 30 and the final round is on Sunday, May 1. The winner of the OAC Tournament receives the OAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
BW carded a 299-stroke total to tie with John Carroll University and host Muskingum for second on the first day on the par-72 and 6,668-yard River Greens layout. In college golf, the team consists of five players with the four best scores that round counting toward the team total. The Yellow Jackets trail first place the University of Mount Union by nine strokes. Fans can access the tournament web site HERE
BW was led by junior Ricky Jaskolski (North Royalton/ Parma Padua), this week's OAC Golfer of the Week, who shot a one-under-par 71. Last week, Jaskolski was the medalist at the 54-hole OAC Spring Invitational in Columbus.
In addition to Jaskolski, senior Academic All-OAC player Brian Routhieaux (Gibsonia, Pa./ Mars Area) shot a 74, sophomore No.1 player Stephen Spalding (Stow/ Walsh Jesuit) carded a 76, freshman Chris Nader (Westlake) had a 78 and junior Matt Warren (Copley) had an 88. Unfortunately BW's No.3 player, freshman Augie Ward (Medina/ Walsh Jesuit) is missing after suffering an injury earlier this week.
The BW men have never won an OAC title.
