Swimming and Diving Celebrates Senior Day with Wins over Franciscan, Pitt.-Bradford

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the home portion of its 2017-18 schedule with non-conference wins over Franciscan University of Steubenville and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford on Seniors' and Parents' Day inside the BW Natatorium.

The BW men defeated Pitt.-Bradford by a score of 147-110 while the Yellow Jacket women notched defeated Franciscan 154-56 and Pitt.-Bradford 154-31. 

Seniors Lena Kortis (Canton/Massillon Perry), Courtney Severns (Bucyrus) and Nicole Gladish (Fairview Park/Fairview) each picked up wins in the final home meet of their careers. Kortis brought home wins in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 25.94 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.97, also a season-best time. Severns won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:01.52 and Gladish took the 200-yard backstroke in 2:36.84.

The BW women also brought home wins in six other individual events. Sophomore freestyler Olivia Jacob (Canton/McKinley) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in season-best and career-best time of 11:18.86 while sophomore All-OAC freestyler Allie Thorson (Amherst/Marion Steele) took the 200-yard freestyle event in 2:05.52.  Sophomore stroker Erika Nockengost (Cuyahoga Falls) finishes first in the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:17.11

Freshman stroker Lauren Martello (Huron/Sandusky) brought home the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.98 and sophomore diver/stroker Ellie Clymer (Independence) won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:13.74. In diving, freshman diver Lauren Franz won the 1-meter event with 143.15 points.

In relay action, the 200-yard medley relay team of Martello, Clymer, freshman stroker Marissa Kural (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) and junior stroker Claire Onchuck (Darrien, Ill./Hinsdale South) won the event in a time of 2:00.29.

On the men's side, senior All-American stroker Tyler Thompson (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) brought home wins in the 100-yard breaststroke in 58.84 seconds, the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:20.26 and the 100-yard individual medley in 57.25 seconds.

Sophomore All-OAC stroker Greg Shaw (Colorado Springs, Colo./Manitou Springs) earned the win in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best time of 2:05.08 and also took the 100-yard butterfly in 53.40 seconds. Junior freestyler John Beyer (Columbus/Centennial) took the 50-yard freestyle in 23.03 seconds.

Freshman freestyler Conner Hartup (Westlake) swam a season-best and career-best time of 11:56.36 to finish as the runner up in 1,000-yard freestyle. Freshman freestyler Matthew Butt (Westfield Center/Cloverleaf) took second in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle in times of 1:52.26 and 5:23.61, respectively. Freshman stroker Michael Morsch (Phoenix, Ariz./Notre Dame Preparatory) was the runner-up in two separate events, swimming 58.85 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and a season- and career-best 2:10.45 in the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore freestyler Austin Lockhart (Olmsted Falls) was a runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.64 seconds.

Competing solo, sophomore diver Evan Rinaldi (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights) earned 131.85 and 143.20 points in the men's 1-meter diving events.

In men's relay action, the 200-yard medley relay team of Morsch, Thompson, Shaw and Lockhart won in 1:38.75.

BW will take the pool next on Saturday, February 3, when the Yellow Jackets compete in a non-conference meet with Ursuline College and Case Western Reserve University at 1 p.m. inside the Veale Natatorium on the campus of Case Western.
