Women’s Tennis Defeats Mount Union to Advance to OAC Tournament Semifinals

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team posted a 5-3 Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal match victory against the University of Mount Union to advance to the OAC Tournament Semifinals.

In the OAC Tournament, all matches are ended when the winning team reaches five team points regardless of the current progress of other matches still on court.   Each match will start with the three doubles matches and will continue with singles action until the winning five points are obtained.

BW (14-9) advances to the semifinals and will play top-seeded John Carroll University on Friday, May 6 at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason at 1 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets will play in their first semifinals match since the 2011 season when they captured the OAC Championship.  Mount Union (11-8) ends its season.

BW took two of three doubles matches from the Purple Raiders to hold a 2-1 advantage.  The tandem of senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC player Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge) and freshman Imani Robinson (Cincinnati /School for Creative & Performing Arts) earned the victory at first doubles by a score of 9-8 and 12-10 in the tiebreaker and now are a team-best 17-8 on the year. Sophomore Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) and freshman Kathleen Moser (Strongsville) took third doubles by a score of 8-4 and upped their record to 9-7.

The Yellow Jackets won three of five singles matches to secure the win. Robinson picked up the victory at second singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-3 as she improved to 17-9 in her first campaign. Junior Claire Watts (Medina/Highland) took third singles by scores of 6-2 and 6-2 as she improved to 13-12 on the season. Senior Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/Davidson) improved her team-best record to 19-5 as she captured fourth singles and clinched the match victory by scores of 2-6, 6-3 and 6-3.

The OAC Tournament Championship will be contested on Saturday, May 7 at the Linder Tennis Family Center in Mason at 10 a.m.   The winner of the OAC Tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
