Women’s Tennis Splits a Pair of Matches at Nancy Heath Invitational

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team opened its 2015-16 season by split a pair of matches at the Nancy J. Heath Invitational hosted by Allegheny College at the Robertson Tennis Complex.

BW (1-1) opened the invitational with hard fought 5-4 loss to Allegheny.  The Yellow Jackets ended the invitational with a 5-4 victory against Grove City (Pa.) College.

Against Allegheny, senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference number one player Kelsey Blatt (Tallmadge), senior number four player Mackenzie Donalson (Hilliard/Davidson), sophomore number five player Shannon Finkenthal (Beachwood) and senior number six player Hayley Peterson (Tulsa, Okla.) all won their singles matches.  

Blatt won in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 to win her 29th career singles victory.  Donalson won in a three-set tie breaker by scores of 5-7, 6-1 and 10- Finkenthal won in a three-set tie breaker by scores of 1-6, 7-5 and 13-11 to earn her eighth career victory.  Peterson won in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-4 to pick up her fifth career win.

Against Grove City, the number one doubles team of Blatt and freshman Imani Robinson (Cincinnati/School for Creative & Performing Arts), the number two team of Donalson and junior Claire Watts (Medina/Highland) and the three team of Finkenthal and Peterson all won to take a 3-0 lead.

Watts and Donalson secured the first victory of the season with wins at number three and four singles.   Watts won by scores of 6-1 and 7-5.  Donalson won by scores of 6-3, 3-6 and 12-10 to pick up her 26th career victory.

BW is back in action on Saturday and Sunday, September 12 and 13 when it travels to nearby Oberlin to compete in the Oberlin Invitational on the Don Hunsinger Tennis Courts.

The first and only home match of the fall season is on Saturday, September 19 when the team hosts NCAA Division II Clarion (Pa.) University for a non-conference dual match on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
