BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost a non-conference game and had its second game called due to darkness against No. 22-nationally ranked and crosstown rival Case Western Reserve University on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex.
Case Western Reserve (13-2) won a two hour and 27-minute rain filled opening game by a final score of 11-7. BW (6-7) was leading the Spartans by a score of 12-8 in the bottom of the fourth inning when the game was called due to darkness. The second game is considered a halted game and will be resume at that exact point when the suspension occurred if both teams are able to find a suitable day to continue the action.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored seven runs on 10 hits as it plated two runs in the second and a season-high tying five runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Spartans scored 11 runs on 11 hits as it scored two runs in the first, six runs in the second, one run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth inning.
The BW offense pounded out a season-high six extra bases hits, including a season-best five doubles. The Yellow Jackets were led by junior third baseman Sami Minor (North Royalton) as she went 3-for-4 with her third career triple and a career-high three runs batted-in (RBIs). Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) and sophomore first baseman Hannah Albrecht (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) each went 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI while Albrecht scored two runs. Junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC designated player Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) had a double, RBI and run scored. Sophomore pitcher Nikki Turner (Hudson) had a double and a run scored. Freshman catcher Alex Dick (Elyria) had her first collegiate hit.
In the circle, senior righty Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) took the loss as she allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Turner pitched the final 5.1 innings and allowed three runs on three hits.
BW is back in action on Thursday, March 29 when it travels to Albion, Michigan for a non-conference doubleheader against Albion College on Dempsey Field at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets return to OAC action on Friday, March 30 when it travels to Alliance for a doubleheader against the University of Mount Union on the 23rd Street Field at 1 p.m.
