Softball Takes Two Against Albion (Mich.) in Home Opener

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team made its debut on the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field and it swept a doubleheader against Albion (Mich.) College.

BW (6-6) won the first game by a final score of 5-2 and took the second game by a score of 10-2 in five innings.  Albion (6-8) scored two runs on six hits as it touched home one in the first and once in the fourth. 

In game one, the Yellow Jackets scored five runs on nine hits as it plated two runs in the third and three in the fourth. 

The BW offense was led by freshman second baseman Alex Kozich (Avon) as she tied a career-high with three hits and had a career-high two doubles as she batted 3-for-3 with two runs batted-in (RBIs), one run scored and one stolen base.   Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference right fielder Alexis Boledovic (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.  Four other Yellow Jackets had a base knock while sophomore All-OAC shortstop Erica English (North Olmsted) recorded the last extra base hit with a double and also knocked in one run. 

In the circle, junior Sam Mott (Frewsburg, N.Y./Central) picked up her team-leading fourth win of the season as she pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) with a career-high tying seven strikeouts and three walks.

In game two, BW scored 10 runs on out 14 hits as it plated two runs in the first, one each in the second and third and three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.  The Britons scored two runs on eight hits as it crossed the plated once in the third and fourth.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by sophomore third baseman Paige Loveless (Mechanicsburg) as she tied a career-high with three hits as she went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.  English went 2-for-3 with a double, career-high three RBIs and a run scored.  Freshman Hannah Albrecht (Northridge, Calif./Chaminade College Prep) went 2-for-3 with a career-high three RBIs.  Kozich was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored.  Five other BW hitters had a base knock while sophomore catcher/designated player Sami Minor (North Royalton) led the way with her second career triple. 

In the circle, senior Academic All-OAC pitcher Erica Morgan (Brook Park/Midpark) picked up her second win of the season as she allowed two runs (one earned) in five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. 

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, March 25 when they open Ohio Athletic Conference action with a home doubleheader against the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m.
