Men’s Tennis Team Defeats Earlham (Ind.), 5-4

GAMBIER, OHIO -- The Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin-Wallace College men's tennis team defeated Earlham (Ind.) College, 5-4, today (Friday, May 11, 2012) in a first round match of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Tournament at the David W. Jasper Tennis Center on the campus of Kenyon College.   This was the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Yellow Jackets.

In the NCAA Tournament, all matches are ended when the winning team reaches five team points regardless of the current progress of other matches still on court.   Each match will start with the three doubles matches and will continue with singles action until the winning five points are obtained.

With its victory, B-W improves to 29-0 overall advances to face No.4-ranked Kenyon College (ITA national poll) in a second round match on Saturday, May 12 at 10:00 a.m.  Earlham ends its season at to 19-2.   

Saturday's other second round match will feature No.21-ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.) against the winner of a first round match between Kalamazoo (Mich.) College and Penn State-Behrend.  The regional championship match is on Saturday, May 13 at 12:00 p.m. The winner of the regional championship will advance to the elite eight on Monday, May 21 at the Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

B-W trailed 2-1after the doubles competition but won four of six singles matches to capture its first NCAA victory.

In doubles action, the No.3 team of freshman Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) and senior Taylor Long (Ashland) won the lone point with an 8-3 victory.

In singles play, junior No.5 player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) secured the second point as he won his match in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-0.  Junior Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) won his match at six singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-2 to give the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 3-2.   Junior No.2 player Joe Horvath (North Royalton) made it a 4-2 advantage as he won his match in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-3.   The Quakers would tie the match at 4-4 before Patterson sealed the victory with his victory at number three singles by scores of 7-6 (7-3) and 6-3.
