Head Coach Brian Rector Wins 400th Career Match

BEREA, OHIO --  Baldwin-Wallace College Men's Tennis Coach Brian Rector won his 400th career match and his Yellow Jackets remained unbeaten at 15-0 overall with a 9-0 shutout victory against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein University this afternoon (Saturday, March 24, 2012) in its OAC opener at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Courts.

With the win against Otterbein, Rector, a 1989 B-W graduate and former Academic All-American, is an amazing 400-83 in 23 seasons at his alma mater. He is the winningest tennis coach in OAC and Ohio collegiate tennis history. As a student-athlete at B-W, Rector once owned all of the Yellow Jacket records for singles and doubles victories, but has since been passed by many of his players. One month after graduating in 1989, his head coach, Truman Fields, recommended Rector as his successor to then Athletic Director Steve Bankson.  To learn more about Brian Rector, please visit the B-W web site at

"I am excited about winning my 400th career match and equally excited that our team is now 15-0 this season," said a smiling Rector. "To be able to win 400 matches takes the hard work, dedication, determination and efforts of a lot of young men over the past 23 years. Outstanding, talented student-athletes make a coach look great, and over the years, I have had the opportunity to coach many great, young student-athletes. We are extremely proud of what we have accomplished both in the classroom and on the tennis courts at B-W and just hope we can keep doing it for a long time to come."

With its victory, B-W is now 15-0 overall and 1-0 in the OAC and has shut out seven opponents this season. Overall, the Yellow Jackets have outscored the opposition, 123-12 this season. Otterbein dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in the OAC.

B-W gained an early 3-0 lead after the doubles competition and won all six singles matches to stretch its winning ways to 15 straight.

In doubles action, the number one tandem of seniors Alex Trzeciak (Avon Lake) and Alexandre Bourdiaux (Paris, FRANCE/
Lycee Saint Dominique) won by an 8-3 score, the No.2 duo of juniors Joe Horvath (North Royalton) and Tyler Beaton (Bemus Point, N.Y./ Maple Grove) won by an identical 8-3 score and the No.3 team of senior Taylor Long (Ashland) and freshman Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) were victorious by an 8-2 score.

In singles play, Trzeciak gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-0 lead with a 6-3 and 6-2 triumph at No.1. Junior No.5 player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) clinched the victory by winning, 6-1 and 6-1.  The lead grew to 6-0 when Patterson disposed of his opponent at No.3 by a 6-0 and 6-1 count. In addition, Horvath won at No.2 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-2, Bourdiaux won at No.4 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-1 and Beaton won at No.6 by the scores of 6-0 and 6-0.

Trzeciak's win was the 78th of his career. He is now 78-19 overall and stands fourth all-time. He needs just one more victory to tie 2-time OAC Player of the Year Mike Wagner (2002-2005) for third place.  Horvath's victory was the 58th of his career and he is now 58-11 overall and tied with Jim Kucera (2006-2009) for 13th all-time.  Horvath also has one more year of eligibility remaining.  For more on the all-time leaders, please visit the B-W web site at
