BEREA, Ohio – After falling behind early, the Baldwin Wallace University baseball team battled back to take a 7-6 non-conference tilt over Oberlin College, at Fisher Field.
BW (3-2) totaled seven runs, including four crucial runs in the fifth, off a season-high 13 hits.
The offense was led by junior third basemen Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic), as he went 2-for-4 at the dish with two runs-batted in(RBI), and a run scored. LoParo sparked the four run fifth inning with a two-out, two-run single to center field. Freshman first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) went 2-of-4 the plate with a solo homerun in the second, two runs scored and an RBI. Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) went 2-of-5 and knocked in two runs with a triple in the third. Senior ABCA/Rawlings All-American selection and All-OAC center fielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) went 2-of-4 with a double and a run scored, while sophomore catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) went 2-of-3 with one run scored. Freshman Bijan Kamalipour (Frisco, Texas/Jesuit College Preparatory School) recorded a two-run, pinch hit double in the fifth to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-5 advantage, while sophomore designated hitter Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) tallied a hit and run scored. Senior two-time Academic All-OAC outfielder Brandon Dim (Solon) registered one hit and a run scored.
Toeing the rubber was left-hand pitcher Spencer Berg (New Albany). Berg pitched 3.2 innings and allowed five earned runs off seven hits and struck out five. Senior two-time Academic All-OAC Michael Hubert (Cincinnati/Oak Hills) received the win after four innings of work where he allowed one run off six hits, and struck out two. With the four out save was Wilson, who allowed zero runs off zero hits and struck out three.
BW is back in action on Saturday, March, 7 when it opens its spring break trip with a contest against Swarthmore (Pa.) College. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
