Baseball Splits a Pair of Non-Conference Contests

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a pair of non-conference games against Oswego (N.Y.) State University and La Roche (Pa.) University on Fisher Field.

BW vs Oswego

BW's (1-2 overall) fell to Oswego, 12-8. The offense was led by designated hitter Drew Wilson (Sagamore Hills/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), as he went 2-for4 at the plate with a two-run double in the fourth, and a homerun in the second. Senior ABCA/Rawlings All-American selection and All-Ohio Athletic Conference outfielder Dudley Taw (Sheffield Lake/Brookside) went 2-of-5 at the dish with a two-run homerun in the ninth and a double. Senior left fielder Jacob Bonner (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) homered to left center in the eighth while sophomore catcher JT Mazula (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) recorded an RBI triple in the fourth. Junior second baseman Tony LoParo (Avon/Elyria Catholic) drove in a run with his double down the left field line in the fourth. Freshman first baseman Luke Vonderhaar (New Bremen) tallied two hits and also scored a run.

Senior left-hand pitcher Spencer Berg (New Albany) got the nod in game one and went four innings, allowed five runs(four earned) off six hits and struck out five. Senior right-hand pitcher Max Adams (Massillon/Washington) received the loss after 1.2 innings of work where he allowed five earned runs off two hits and struck out three. Sophomore right-hand pitcher Maxwell Cebulak (Oakmont, Pa./Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) dealt two-thirds of an inning and let up one earned run off zero hits and struck out one. Freshman pitcher Matt Sabin (Mentor) struck out two in his inning of work and junior pitcher Jeremy McClure (Mentor) allowed one unearned run off one hit in his inning.

BW vs La Roche 

Due to sunlight restrictions, the Yellow Jackets defeated La Roche 4-3 in eight innings. The offense was led by LoParo as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI, including a double in the seventh that gave BW a 4-3 advantage. Taw launched his second home run of the day in the fifth to drive in two. Junior All-OAC shortstop Alex Ludwick (Brunswick/Padua Franciscan) went 2-for-4 with one run and a double. Vonderhaar tallied two runs and a single while Wilson recorded a double.

Wilson made the start in game two and went five innings, struck out a career-high nine and only allowed one earned run off three hits. Sophomore pitcher Garret McLeod (Medina) received the win after two innings of work where he permitted one earned run off three hits and struck out two. Senior left-handed pitcher John Kaprosy (Mentor) threw the final and eighth inning and allowed a hit to earn his first career save.

The Yellow Jackets return to the diamond on Friday, February, 28 for a non-conference contest with Franklin (Ind.) College in Westfield, Indiana. First pitch is at 4 p.m. The next day, BW faces the University of Wisconsin Whitewater in a single game at 1 p.m.
