Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan in Final Games of Spring Trip

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split a doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan University today (Saturday, March 12, 2011) in its final games of the Snowbird Baseball Classic on the team's spring break trip to Port Charlotte, Florida. The Yellow Jackets won game one, 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, but were shutout in the second game, 2-0.

With the split, B-W moves to 4-4 overall. Ohio Wesleyan is now 4-6 overall.

In game one, B-W gained a 1-0 advantage with one run in the first inning. OWU scored one run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game 1-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore second baseman Keith Blazek 
(Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) reached base on an error by OWU's third baseman. Senior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village/ Bay) walked advancing Blazek to second. Sophomore first baseman Dan Craft (Elmira, N.Y./ Southside) then hit a grounder to third which was fielded by OWU.  However, the throw to first went into rightfield allowing Blazek to score from second, giving B-W the victory.

At the plate, sophomore center fielder Nolan Neuschaefer (Elyria/ Senior) was two-for-three with a stolen base and a run scored. Ulanski went 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a walk.

On the mound, sophomore righthander Pat Havens (Twinsburg) tossed a strong eight and one-third innings, allowing only five hits, one earned run, along with five strikeouts. Junior righty Bill Bostelman (Marion/ Harding) followed Havens and pitched one-third of an inning allowing one walk and one hit. Junior righthander Josh Stobinski (Ottawa Hills) got the final out of the ninth to get the win.

In game two, OWU scored a pair of runs in the third to earn the split. The B-W offense could muster only two hits to Ohio Wesleyan's four.

At the plate, sophomore third baseman Jay Yost (Bascom/ Hopewell-Loudon) was 1-for-2 with a single. Junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls) also went 1-for-2 with a single.

On the mound, junior Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) started and pitched the first three innings in the loss. He gave up two hits, two runs (both earned) and fanned two batters. He was followed by junior Josh Scott (Strongsville) for two innings of scoreless work. Scott allowed one hit and had two strikeouts. Freshman Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) pitched one inning and struck out a pair without surrendering a run.

B-W is back action next weekend when they travel to Chillicothe, Ohio to play a pair of single, nine-inning games. BW plays Ohio Christian College on Saturday, March 19 at 10:00 a.m. and Oberlin College on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets first home game is on March 26 when B-W hosts NAIA foe Malone University at Heritage Field in a single nine-inning game at 1:00 p.m.
