Baseball Team Drops 2011 Season Opener to Ohio Wesleyan, 14-6

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team dropped its 2011 season opener today (Sunday, March 6) with a 14-6 loss to Ohio Wesleyan University on the first day of the team's spring break trip at the Snowbird Baseball Classic at North Charlotte Regional Park. The game was Brian Harrison's debut as Yellow Jacket head coach.

Harrison, in his first year at B-W, succeeds the legendary Bob Fisher '63, who retired after 42 seasons as head coach and 51 years at his alma mater with 700 career wins. This was the first of eight games in six days for the Yellow Jackets, 0-1 overall.

Ohio Wesleyan, now 2-2 overall, jumped on Yellow Jacket sophomore starter Dave Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley), for four runs in the opening inning and three runs in the third to build a 7-0 advantage. OWU added three in the fifth and two in the sixth before B-W got on the board with a six-run sixth inning, cutting the deficit in half, 12-6. The Battling Bishops added two insurance runs in the seventh for the final margin.

At the plate, Ohio Wesleyan out hit BW, 17-9. The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman outfielder Ryan Weed (Chardon) who was two-for-four with a run batted in. Sophomore second baseman Keith Blazek (Erie, Pa./ Cathedral Prep) was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored. Senior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village/ Bay) had a double, an RBI, and a run scored.

On the mound, Redovian pitched the first three innings surrendering seven runs (four earned) on six hits. He was followed by freshman Jon Capadona (North Royalton) for two innings, junior Josh Scott (Strongsville) for two-thirds of an inning, and junior Brent Edmonds (Olmsted Falls) for one inning. Senior Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) and freshman Dylan Fodor (Twinsburg) combined to pitch scoreless baseball over the final two and two-thirds.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, Monday, March 7 when they face Medaille (N.Y.) College in a single, nine-inning game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
