Baseball Team Defeats Traditional Rival Oberlin, 6-3

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated traditional rival Oberlin College, 6-3, today (Saturday, March 19, 2011) at Veterans Administration Memorial Stadium in the second of two non-league games today.  Earlier today, B-W shut out Ohio Christian University, 12-0, behind a no-hitter from junior right-handed pitcher Josh Scott (Strongsville).

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 6-4 overall. Oberlin falls to 1-2 with its loss. B-W and Oberlin return to action tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. doubleheader in Chillicothe.

The Yeomen would strike first as they scored one run in the second inning and added another run in the fifth inning.  B-W would rally back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Yellow Jackets added another in the sixth to make the score 4-2. Oberlin closed the gap in the seventh inning scoring one run making the score 4-3, but B-W knocked in two insurance runs during the bottom of the eighth, making the final score 6-3.

Sophomore pitcher David Redovian (Fairlawn/ Copley) started on the mound for the Yellow Jackets and went four and a third innings, striking out four, while allowing two earned runs on five hits.  Sophomore pitcher Steven Foltz (North Canton/ St. Thomas Aquinas) would come on in relief during the fifth inning as he pitched two thirds of an inning and picked up his first win as a Yellow Jacket. 

Freshman Cory Waite (Willoughby/ South) finished the last two and one third innings for the Yellow Jackets and picked up the first save of his career as he struck out two without allowing a run.

At the plate, the Yellow Jackets were led by senior catcher John Ulanski (Bay Village/ Bay) and junior shortstop Anthony Longhitano (Cuyahoga Falls).  Ulanski went three-for-five with two runs batted in and Longhitano went 2-for-4 with a double and scored one run. Sophomore leftfielder Brendan Toughey (East Amherst, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) scored two runs and had an RBI.

Following tomorrow's games versus Oberlin, the Yellow Jackets return to action on next Saturday (March 26) when B-W hosts NAIA foe Malone University at Heritage Field in a single nine-inning game at 1:00 p.m.
