BW Men’s Tennis Team Beats St. Francis (Ind.) to Improve to 7-0

DEFIANCE, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division II St. Francis (Ind.) University, 9-0, today (Saturday, March 2, 2013) at Defiance College in the George M. Smart Athletic Facility.  The win kept the Yellow Jackets unbeaten prior to their 2:00 p.m. match today versus host Defiance.

With its victory, BW improves to 7-0 overall and has now won 35 of its last 36 dual matches dating back to last season.  With its loss, St. Francis is 0-13 overall.

BW gained a 3-0 lead after doubles play and closed out the match by winning all singles matches.

In doubles, the No. 1 duo of freshman No.3 singles student-athlete Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and freshman No.5 singles player Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated St. Francis' No.1 tandem of Ryan Mey and Tate Dishman by an 8-1 score.  The No.2 tandem of sophomore No.2 singles standout Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) and junior No.6 singles player Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) beat Spencer Heise and Jaxson Burkins of St. Francis, 8-2. The No. 3 team of senior No.1 singles player Joe Horvath (North Royalton) and senior No.4 singles player Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) defeated St. Francis' Michael Thompson and Kyle Andrews, 8-1.

In singles, Horvath beat Mey, 6-1 and 6-0 at No.1, Patterson beat Dishman, 6-0 and 6-1, at No.2, Harris beat Heise, 6-0 and 6-0 at No.3, Ganim beat Thompson, 6-0 and 6-0 at No.4, Minrovic beat Burkins, 6-0 and 6-0 at No.5, and junior Zach Elbin (Findlay) beat Andrews, 6-2 and 6-1, at No.6.

The Yellow Jacket men are back in action on Sunday, March 10 when they travel to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina from March 10-15 on their annual Spring Break Trip. BW plays Nazareth (N.Y.) College in its first match at 8:00 a.m. The first northern match is on Saturday, March 23 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

A year ago, the BW men posted a set a school-record with 29 victories, posted a 29-1 record, won both the OAC regular season title (9-0 record) and the OAC Tournament title and advanced to its first-ever NCAA Division III National Tournament where they won its first-ever NCAA tourney match.
