HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated NCAA Division II Philadelphia University, 6-3, today (Monday, March 11, 2013) on the second day of its annual Spring Break Trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina.
With its victory, BW improves to 12-0 overall, is 4-0 on its spring break trip, and has now won 40 of its last 41 dual matches dating back to last season. With its loss, Philadelphia falls to 2-6.
BW swept doubles play and won three of six singles matches to secure the victory.
In doubles, the No. 1 duo of freshmen Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated Kyle Burke and Dylan Bhaerman, 8-2, and improved their season record to 14-4 overall. The No. 2 tandem of three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton) and Academic All-OAC junior Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet), playing as a pair for the first time this season, beat junior Ayman Barakat and sophomore Nail Rachidi, 9-8. At No. 3 doubles, senior Alexander Kearney (North Olmsted) and junior Zach Elbin (Findlay) defeated Long Vo and Chris Casamassima, 8-6, and improved to 3-1 as a duo.
In singles play, No. 1 Horvath defeated Kyle Burke, 8-6, and improved his overall record to 12-3; at No. 3, Kearney defeated Rachidi, 8-6, improving to 13-1; No. 4 Ganim beat Vo, 8-1, and improved to 13-3.
The Yellow Jackets return to action tomorrow when they play Gordon (Mass.) College at 8:30 a.m. and play Northwestern (Minn.) College at 4:00 p.m.
A year ago, BW won a school-record 28 matches, finished 28-1 overall, won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
