Men's Tennis Team Beats Gordon (Mass.) to Stay Unbeaten

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team defeated Gordon (Mass.) College, 9-0, today (Tuesday, March 12, 2013) on the third day of its annual Spring Break Trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina.  The match, scheduled for this morning, was postponed due to rain.

With its victory, BW improves to 13-0 overall, is 5-0 on its spring break trip, and has now won 41 of its last 42 dual matches dating back to last season.  With its loss, Gordon is 0-3 overall.

The Yellow Jackets' match against Northwestern (Minn.) College, originally scheduled for this afternoon, was cancelled.

BW swept all three doubles matches and took all six singles matches.

In doubles, the No. 1 duo of freshmen Peter Harris (Akron/ Richfield Revere) and Doug Ganim (Olentangy/ Orange) defeated freshman Zach Hall and sophomore Kenny Gaudio, 8-5, and improved their season record to 15-4 overall.  The No. 2 tandem of sophomore Kyle Patterson (Wooster/ Triway) and Academic All-OAC junior Brad Minrovic (Akron/ Ellet) beat senior Brandon Inkles and freshman Richie Armand, 8-1, to improve to 10-3.  At No. 3 doubles, junior Dan Rowsey (Ashland/ Senior) and junior Zach Elbin (Findlay) beat freshmen Joe Daugherty and Mike Olszak, 8-0, to improve to 3-4 overall.

In singles play, No. 1 three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton) defeated Hall, 6-0 and 6-3, to improve to 13-3 overall.  No. 2 Patterson beat Gaudio, 6-4 and 6-1, to improve to 16-3 overall. No. 3 Harris defeated Inkles, 6-0 in straight sets, and improved to 15-3.  No. 4 Ganim defeated Armand, 6-0 and 6-2, to improve to 14-3 overall. No. 5 Minrovic defeated Daugherty, 6-0 in straight sets, and improved to 14-4.  At No. 6, Rowsey beat Olszak, 6-3 and 6-0, to climb to 6-5.

With his win, Horvath is now 86-11 during his career and is one singles win shy of tying former Yellow Jacket Alex Trzeciak '12 for second place on BW's all-time singles wins list.

The Yellow Jackets end their spring break matches tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13 when they play Fairleigh Dickinson (N.J.) University at 8:00 a.m.  The first northern match is Saturday, March 23 at Ohio Wesleyan University at 12:00 noon. The first home and OAC match is on Tuesday, March 26 against Muskingum University at 4:00 p.m.

A year ago, BW won a school-record 29 matches, finished 29-1 overall, won the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles and advanced to the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III National Tournament.
