ADA, OHIO – The defending Ohio Athletic Conference champion Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team lost its first regular season match in two seasons with a 6-3 loss at Ohio Northern University today (Saturday, April 20, 2013) in an OAC match at ONU's University Courts.
The loss drops the Yellow Jackets to 20-1 overall and 5-1 in the OAC, and snaps a 49-match regular season winning streak that dates back to the last match of the 2010-11 season. BW also slid into second place in the OAC standings. ONU improves to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the OAC.
The Polar Bears led, 2-1, after doubles play and won four of six singles matches.
All-OAC No. 1 senior Joe Horvath (North Royalton) defeated senior Joey Frank, 6-4 and 6-1, and improved to 21-3 for the season and 94-11 for his career, 11 wins shy of all-time leader James Daly (2005-2008), who won 105 matches. At No. 3, freshman No. 3 Peter Harris (Akron/ Revere) defeated junior Josh Saunders by identical 6-4 sets and upped his season record to 23-3.
In doubles action, the No. 3 tandem of Horvath and senior Academic All-OAC standout Alex Kearney (North Olmsted) defeated sophomore Sam Prewitt and junior Blake Troller, 8-1, and upped their season record to 13-0.
BW returns to the courts Wednesday, April 24 when it hosts OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at the "Pop" Collins Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m. before facing Marietta College on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will also play Capital at a date to-be-determined.
