No. 3 Baseball Takes Two From Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio - The No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept Muskingum University in a rescheduled Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 9-3 and 13-5 at Mose Morehead Field.

BW (24-4, 9-1 OAC) played from behind early in Game 1 but scored seven straight to take care of Muskingum (15-12, 6-4 OAC). The Brown and Gold started off hot in the second game as they took an early lead in the first inning and added some insurance runs in four of the next five frames and added a five-run eighth to secure their ninth victory in conference play.

Game 1

Scoring Plays

  • Top 4th - Junior right fielder Brandon Gelpi (Monroeville, Pa./Central Catholic) doubled to left to put the Yellow Jackets on the board
  • Top 4th - Sophomore shortstop Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) made it a tie ballgame with an RBI single
  • Top 4th - Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring one run and a Fighting Muskies error made it a 4-2
  • Top 5th - Terzola reached on a fielder's choice to extend the Brown and Gold lead
  • Top 6th - Junior designated hitter Mally Kilbane (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls) added a sac fly 
  • Top 6th - Senior third baseman Nick Clark (Willowick/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) singled up the middle for the seventh straight BW run
  • Top 9th - Mohnickey Jr. reached on another Muskingum miscue and Gelpi came around to score
  • Top 9th - A balk from the Fighting Muskies allowed BW to run away with the victory

At the Plate

  • Terzola led the team in RBIs as he recorded two on his two hits in four at-bats
  • Kilbane, the OAC Hitter of the Week, went a team-best 2-for-3 with an RBI
  • Senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) was the fifth Yellow Jacket with a multi-hit game on the day
  • Clark and senior left fielder Joey Marousek (North Royalton) also each finished 2-for-5 and scored one run

On the Mound

  • Junior right-hander Vince Dolcemaschio (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) threw his first complete game in a BW uniform after striking out eight batters and allowing three runs on seven hits

Scoring Plays

  • Top 1st - Freshman catcher Mason Fixx (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) started the scoring off with a two-run single down the left field line
  • Top 2nd - Marousek drove in two with a single of his own to extend the lead for the Brown and Gold
  • Top 3rd - Kilbane picked up his first extra base hit of the day with an RBI double
  • Top 5th - Fixx added another RBI with a double to right
  • Top 5th - Sophomore second baseman Jace Druschel (Tampa, Fla/George Steinbrenner) drove in another run with his third hit of the day
  • Top 6th - Fixx delivered once again with a sac fly to left
  • Top 8th - Anastasio teed off for a three-run homer: his first as a Yellow Jacket
  • Top 8th - Junior first baseman Nathan Zinn (Columbus/Worthington Kilbourne) hit a pinch-hit single to score another run
  • Top 8th - Sophomore center fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) collected his first RBI of the day with a single to left

At the Plate

  • Fixx finished with a career-best four RBI and went 3-for-4
  • Druschel and Kilbane each finished with three hits and an RBI
  • Marousek tallied gathered three hits and two RBI in six at bats
  • Anastasio added three RBI and two runs scored
  • Terzola also had a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-4

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) secured the win as he pitched 6.1 innings where he allowed only three earned runs on five hits and struck out five
  • Senior right-hander Matt Sabin (Mentor) finished the seventh inning where he tallied a strikeout and two walks
  • Senior right-hander Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) threw one inning where he struck out one batter and allowed one run on two hits
  • Freshman right-hander Nolan Kellicker (Dover) went three up three down in the ninth with two strikeouts

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 17 when they travel to Tiffin for an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Heidelberg University beginning at 1 p.m. at Peaceful Valley.
