No. 3 Baseball Claims OAC Regular Season Title in Split with Capital

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 3 nationally ranked Baldwin Wallace University baseball team claimed sole possession of the Ohio Athletic Conference regular season title for the second straight year after splitting a doubleheader with Capital University as they dropped the first game by a score of 14-6 and won the second by a score of 4-1 at Fisher Field. 

BW (30-6, 14-2 OAC) fell to an early deficit in Game 1 after Capital (9-26, 3-13 OAC) came out swinging with a three-run second inning. The Brown and Gold answered back with three of their own but the Comets went on to outscore BW 11-3 down the stretch to pull off the in-conference upset. The Yellow Jackets bounced back in the second game after a pitcher's duel kept it scoreless until the fifth but BW was able to tack on three more runs leading to a series split.

Game 1

Scoring Plays

  • Bottom 2nd - Sophomore left fielder Trent Bucy (Eastlake/Eastlake North) started a three-run inning with an RBI single
  • Bottom 2nd - Senior catcher Mark Mohnickey Jr. (North Ridgeville/St. Edward) drove in another run in the next at-bat
  • Bottom 2nd - Sophomore center fielder Dennis Ritlinger-Nirider (Grove City) tied the game with a third straight RBI single for the Yellow Jackets
  • Bottom 4th - Ritlinger-Nirider drove in his second run of the day with an infield single
  • Bottom 6th - Ritlinger-Nirider added an RBI triple to his big day at the plate
  • Bottom 6th - Junior right fielder Joey Marousek (North Royalton) reached on an error to score another run for the Brown and Gold

At the Plate

  • Ritlinger-Nirider recorded two new career-highs in hits and RBIs with three apiece
  • Mohnickey Jr. finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and two singles
  • Bucy also tallied two hits and scored a team-high three runs

One the Mound

  • Junior right hander Vince Dolcemaschio (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) went three innings where he allowed six runs on nine hits and struck out two
  • Senior right-hander Matt Sabin (Mentor) tied a game-high three strikeouts in his 1.2 innings as he surrendered three runs
  • Sophomore left-hander Nolan Kellicker (Dover) threw 1.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits
  • Sophomore left-hander Brandon Bechtold (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) walked one batter in his collegiate debut
  • Senior right-hander Drew Schaly (Ashland) went two innings and allowed only one earned run on two hits 
  • Senior All-OAC right-hander Gordon Seger (Rome/Grand Valley) threw a perfect ninth inning

Game 2

Scoring Plays

  • Bottom 5th - Sophomore shortstop Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) laid down a sacrifice bunt to break the scoreless tie
  • Bottom 7th - Senior first baseman Max Anastasio (Chesterbrook, Pa./Conestoga) hit a two-run blast to right for his third homer of the year
  • Bottom 8th - Sophomore outfielder Reid Fleming (Pickerington/North) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the lead

At the Plate

  • Anastasio led the way with two RBI after he finished 2-for-3 with a run scored
  • Ritlinger-Nirider made it two multi-hit games on the day 
  • Marousek supplied the last hit for the BW offense

On the Mound

  • Sophomore right-hander Tyler Walker (Fairlawn/Copley) threw his first career complete game and took a no-hit bid into the seventh. Walker earned his conference-leading eighth win of the season as he tied a career-high seven strikeouts and allowed only one run on three hits

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Sunday, April 28 when they travel to Nappanee, Ind. for a Top-25 neutral site game against No. 17 nationally ranked Benedictine (Ill.) University at a time to be determined hosted by NorthWood High School at the Field of Dreams Complex.
