Women Defeat Wilmington, 63-58, in OAC Opener in Berea

BEREA, OHIO --  Freshman guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) scored a career-high 17 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Wilmington College, 63-58, today (Saturday, November 28, 2009) in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for each team in Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center in Berea.

In addition to Carpenter for B-W, sophomore forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/ Miami Trace) joined her in double figures with a career-high 14 points and senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) had 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. For Wilmington, senior All-OAC center Kortney Kin was the only player in double digits with a game-high 29 points.

With its win, B-W is now 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the OAC next plays on Wednesday, December 2 at Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at 7:30 p.m. in University Heights at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. With its loss, Wilmington is now 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the OAC and next plays at home versus Muskingum University on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the 17:05 mark when sophomore forward Catherine Spisak (Sandusky/ St. Mary's Central Catholic) made a jump shot. After the game was tied at 4-4 and 6-6, B-W went on a 7-0 run to take its largest lead of the half at 13-6 with 12:59 left when freshman Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./ Corry Area) banked home a three-pointer.

Wilmington then went on a 13-5 run to close to within one point at 19-18 with 4:25 left before the intermission when freshman guard LeAnn Topp made two foul shots. But B-W rebuilt its lead to six points at 24-18 with 2:47 left with a 5-0 run that was capped when Carpenter made a jumper off glass. Carpenter scored all five points in the run. B-W also led at halftime, 24-21.

In the second half, Wilmington tied the score at 26-26 with 17:52 left when Kin made one foul shot. B-W then outscore the Quakers 6-2 to take a 32-28 lead with 16:11 left when freshman guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/Colonel Crawford) made a layup, was fouled and made the free throw for a three-point play.

After B-W increased its lead to six points at 38-32, the Quakers went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 39-38 with 10:47 left when senior forward Claire Brown made a three-pointer. After four lead changes, B-W regained the lead at 49-44 with 5:45 left with a 6-0 run senior Brough made a jumper. The lead grew to six points at 51-45 at the 5:02 mark when junior forward Coulter made two foul shots.

The teams then traded baskets on six straight possessions before Kin canned a three-pointer at the 1:23 mark to make the score 57-54 and then made two foul shots at 1:23 to bring Wilmington within 57- 56. Coulter gave B-W back its three-point advantage with 1:00 left with a running jumper off glass. Carpenter then gave B-W a five-point bulge at 61-56 with 37 seconds left with two foul shots. A Kin jumper with 12.24 seconds left closed the Quaker scoring. BW "iced" the game with 10.37 seconds left when freshman guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) made two foul shots. The points were the only scores of the game for Rossman.
