BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team lost to host University of Rochester (N.Y.), 78-62, today (Saturday, November 21, 2009) in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the Louis Alexander Palestra in Rochester, New York. Junior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and freshman point Olivia French (Bucyrus/ Colonel Crawford) were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts over the weekend.
With the loss, B-W falls to 1-1 overall and is home for the first time this season on Tuesday, Nov. 24 versus Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at 7:00 p.m. at Ursprung Gymnasium. Rochester improves to 2-0 with its win.
In the first half, B-W tied the score at 13 apiece with a jumper from senior center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy Liberty) at the 9:10 mark. Rochester quickly regained control of the game with an 11-2 run capped by a Melissa Alwardt three-pointer to make the score 24-15 with 4:55 left in the half. After B-W cut its deficit to seven with two free throws from junior guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove), Rochester scored eight straight and eventually went into the half with a 35-19 lead.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets got to within seven, at 50-43, by hitting three consecutive triples, the last coming from freshman wing Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) with 11:29 left to play. However, Rochester responded with two three's of its own to start a game-clinching 18-8 run.
Rochester had four players in double-figures including Alwardt with 25 and Jodie Luther with 15.
B-W was outshot 50.9 percent to 33.3% but did win the battle on the boards, 40-33.
