Women Defeat John Carroll, 75-61, in University Heights; Harrer Wins 399th Career Game

BEREA, OHIO --  Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference forward Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a team-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 75-61, tonight (Wednesday, December 2, 2009) in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center in University Heights.  The win was the fourth straight by the Yellow Jackets over the Blue Streaks and increased B-W's all-time series advantage to 39-19.  It also was the 399th in the career of B-W Head Coach Cheri Harrer (399-139 in 20 seasons).

In addition to Schroeder for B-W, freshman guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/ Hoover) came off the bench to score 13 points and senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. For JCU, junior forward Lee Jennings had a game-high 26 points, six rebounds and eight assists and senior forward Caitlin Surek had 16 points.

With its win, B-W is now 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the OAC next plays on Saturday, December 5 at Kenyon College in Gambier at 1:00 p.m. With its loss, JCU is now 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the OAC and next plays at Muskingum University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

In the first half, B-W jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 19:10 mark when Schroeder made a three-pointer.  The lead grew to 11 points at 15-4 at the 14:10 mark when sophomore forward Katie Heinlen (Bucyrus/ Wynford)made a layup.  JCU clawed back to trail by two points at 29-27 with 3:53 left when senior guard Whitney Hamilton made a layup. B-W outscored JCU 7-2 the remainder of the period to lad 36-29 at the intermission.

In the second half, B-W built its lead to 10 points at 43-33 with 16:39 left when Carpenter made a layup. JCU again closed to within two points at 43-41 a the 15:16 mark with an 8-0 run that was capped by a Jennings layup.  B-W then went on a 13-3 run of its ow to build its largest lead at 12 points at 56-44 with 11:28 left when sophomore forward Monica Gustin (Bexley) made a jump shot.  The lead grew to a game-high 15 points at 71-56 with 2:59 remaining when Schroeder made a layup.
