Women Defeat JCU, 74-51, on Seniors' Night in Berea; Clinches #2 Seed in OAC Tournament

BEREA, OHIO -- Junior center Ariel Brough (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) and freshman forward Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) each scored 10 points as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 74-51, tonight (Wednesday, February 19, 2009) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. In addition, tonight's game also was a "Pink Zone" game with all gate proceeds going to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.

In addition to Brough and Strayer for B-W, senior guards Amanda Mondrach (Parma/Parma Heights/Holy Name) and Rachel Quiring (Brunswick/Parma Heights Holy Name) scored eight points apiece. Freshman forward Nancy Coulter (Washington Court House/Miami Trace) totaled six points and a game-high eight rebounds.  John Carroll was led by Laura Gruber with a game-high 15 points.

With its win, B-W improves to 18-6 overall and 13-4 in the OAC. With its loss, John Carroll falls to 13-11 overall and 8-9 in the OAC.

Each side started slow in the first half until a 9-0 run by the Jackets made the score 13-2 at the 12:44 mark. Strayer sparked the run with a pair of layups and sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) accounted for three points with a layup followed by a foul shot.

John Carroll cut its deficit to seven with a quick 4-0 run but the Yellow Jackets scored 22 of the game's next 25 points to move ahead 35-9 with 1:18 left before the break.

Mondrach buried a three-pointer, Quiring scored four straight on two jumpers, and sophomore Courtney Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) connected on a deep triple to highlight the run. B-W also held the Blue Streaks scoreless for a span of 4:03 while building its lead.

John Carroll got its only bucket of the final 5:21 when Gruber scored on a jumper at 00:57 but B-W sophomore guard Carrie Ritzler (Fostoria/Hopewell-Loudon) canned a three with four seconds left on the clock to make the score 38-11 at half.

B-W's lead never dropped below 23 in the second period and reached a high of 33 points, at 52-19, when Quiring connected on a pair of layups at 15:40.

The Yellow Jacket women return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 when they end the regular season by travelling to Marietta, Ohio to play the Marietta College Pioneers at the Ban Johnson Arena at 3:00 p.m.  The 2009 OAC Tournament begins next Tuesday, Feb. 24 and B-W will host a first round game in Berea at 7:30 p.m.
