Women's Basketball Team Defeats Capital, 68-61, in Berea to win its Eighth Straight Game

BEREA, OHIO -- Sophomore guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) scored a career-high 23 points, including the final 13 for the Yellow Jackets, as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's basketball team defeated Capital University, 68-61, today (Saturday, January 24, 2009) in an Ohio Athletic Conference game in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea. The victory was the eighth straight for the Yellow Jackets while the Crusaders ended a five-game winning streak. 

In addition to Schroeder for B-W, junior Academic All-OAC center Ariel Brough (Powell/ Olentangy-Liberty) had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds and senior Academic All-OAC point guard Rachael Quiring (Brunswick/ Parma Heights Holy Name) scored 12.  Capital was led by senior forward Danielle Sanna with 17 points and senior forward Caitlin Elsass and junior guard Kristen Richardson each had 15 points.

With its win, B-W improves to 12-5 overall and 7-3 in the OAC. With its loss, Capital is now 11-4 overall and 9-2 in the OAC.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the 16:30 mark when sophomore guard Carrie Rizler (Fostoria/ Hopewell-Loudon) made two foul shots. Following a 7-3 Capital run that made the score 11-7 with 12:19 left, Brough and Schroeder scored for B-W to push the lead back to 15-7 with 10:35 left.

The Cruaders then went on a 6-2 run to close to 17-13 at the 8:45 mark when junior guard Abbey Winland made a three-pointer. The rest of the half belonged to B-W. First, the Jackets went on a 7-2 run to build the advantage to 24-15 with 6:47 left when senior 3-time All-OAC guard Amanda Mondrach (Parma Heights/ Holy Name) made a three-pointer. B-W closed the half with a 12-8 run to build its largest lead of 13 points at 36-23 with 40 seconds remaining when freshman forward Mariah Strayer (Bellevue) made a layup.

In the second half, B-W scored the first two points to build its lead to 15 points at 38-23 with 19:46 left when Brough made two foul shots. Capital then went on an 11-4 run to close to 42-34 with 16:06 left when senior forward Caitlin Elsass made a layup.

Undaunted, B-W pushed its lead back to 13 points with 6-1 run with 14:21 left as Quiring scored all six points. Capital then went on its own 8-0 run to close to within five points at 48-43 with 11:13 left when freshman guard Hillary Kuhns made a layup.

B-W then put the game away with a 10-point run to take a commanding 58-43 lead at the 9:16 mark when Schroeder made a three-pointer. It was the beginning of the 13-point run for B-W's leading scorer.

Despite the deficit, Capital went on a 12-0 run to get as close as three points at 58-55 with 4:52 left when Richardson Made two foul shots.

B-W then regained a seven-point lead at 62-55 when Schroeder made a foul shot at 4:35 and scored on a three-point play at 3:08.  A Sanna layup cut the lead to 62-57 at 2:46 and a basketball by Elsass made it 62-59 with 1:43 left.

Schroeder then made it a two-possession game with two foul shots at 1:15. Two more foul shots by Schroeder at 22.19 made it 66-61 and matched her career-high and two more with 12.75 seconds left gave her a career-high and B-W the key OAC win.

The Yellow Jacket women return to action on Wednesday, January 28 when they travel to Alliance to play Mount Union College at 7:30 p.m.
