B-W Softball Team Sweeps College of St. Elizabeth (N.J.) and Dubuque (Iowa) in Tucson, Arizona

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team swept a pair of games on the third day of the Annual Tucson Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. The Yellow Jackets, now 4-2 overall, are currently playing 10 games in five days as part of their annual spring break trip.

The Yellow Jackets opened the day with a solid, 19-0 shutout of the College of St. Elizabeth and followed that effort with a 10-9 victory against Dubuque in 10 innings.  To date and after six contests, the B-W trip has been highlighted by 'HOT' hitting.

Against the College of St. Elizabeth, B-W took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, led 18-0 after four frames and concluded with the five-inning 10-run rule.  Offensively, sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference catcher/ designated hitter Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) led the way by going three-of-four at the plate with two doubles, a triple, four runs scored and four runs batted-in. Junior transfer centerfielder Mallory Kobak (Independence), junior transfer LF Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland), senior All-OAC first baseman Caitlin Myor (Elyria/ Senior), sophomore 3B Becky Miner (Berea) and junior 2B Lauren Sabolik (Strongsville) each contributed two hits to the 17-hit attack. Saunders also scored four runs and drove in three, and Kobak stole three bases and now has nine in six games.

On the mound, sophomore Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/Senior) started and allowed one hit and no runs in two innings of work with three strikeouts. She was followed by sophomore Alyssa Brosious (Westfield, N.Y./ Westfield Academy and Central School), who threw the next two innings and allowed one hit and no runs. Sophomore Samantha Swineford (Nova/ Ashland Mapleton) threw the final inning and did not allow a hit or run and struck out one.

In its victory versus Dubuque, the Yellow Jackets built a 5-0 lead after four innings before the visitor scored five times in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, B-W and Dubuque each scored twice in both the seventh and eighth innings to remain tied at 9-9 entering the 10th frame. In the 10th inning, junior OF Monica Brassee (Wellington) began the inning at second base, was sacrifice bunted to third and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by KobakKobak also had a key two-run triple in the eighth inning that tied the game at 7-7.

Offensively, Kobak, Davis and Myor each had three hits to lead the way and junior 3B Megan Coyne (Vallery City/ LaGrange Keystone) and sophomore shortstop Katrina Resek (Strongsville) each had two hits to pace the 16-hit attack. Davis also scored three runs and drove in three more.

On the mound, freshman Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) earned her second victory of the trip by pitching the first five and last four innings.

After six contests, Kobak tops the team in hitting at .682 (15-of-22) and Davis is hitting .571 (12-of-21) with a team-leading 11 runs scored, four doubles and is tied with Kobak for the lead with 12 RBI. Kobak also has scored 10 runs and has stolen 10 bases. In addition, Myor is batting .478 with a team-leading two homers and Resek is hitting .428 and Coyne is at an even .400.  On the mound, Rohrbacher is 1-1 with a team-leading .245 earned run average. Baker is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA and a team-leading 18 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. Brosious is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two innings and is hitting .400.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action in Tucson tomorrow when they play Monmouth (Ill.) College in their first game at 5:00 p.m. and then face fellow-Ohio school Kenyon College at 7:30 p.m.
