Yellow Jacket Softball Team Loses to Wilmington, 4-3, in Eight Innings

WILMINGTON, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference foe Wilmington College, 4-3 in eight innings, in the second game of a doubleheader. This was the first of six straight doubleheaders in six days for the Yellow Jackets.

With its loss, BW falls to 13-8 overall and 2-3 in the OAC. With its win, Wilmington improves to 17-8 overall and 3-6 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as junior left fielder Nikki Peskura (Strongsville) singled, moved to second base via a sacrifice bunt and to third base when Wilmington made a error and scored on a single by junior Academic All-OAC first baseman Kaity Mullen (Avon Lake).  The Quakers tied the game with a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie it at 1-1.

The Quakers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a hit, sacrifice bunt, ground out to advance the runner to third and a run-scoring single.

BW regained a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth when junior catcher Sami Brown (Kent/Field) doubled and was replaced by pinch runner junior outfielder Kate Carabin (Norwalk/St. Paul) who advanced to third base. After Peskura walked, sophomore All-OAC shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) reached via a Quaker error that scored Carabin to tie it at 2-2 and advanced Peskura to second base. She then scored when junior All-OAC pitcher/ designated hitter Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field), this week's OAC Hitter of the Week, singled her home.

Wilmington tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

In the eighth inning, Wilmington scored the winning run with two outs on a walk-off bases on balls with the bases loaded.

At the plate, Peskura led the way with two base hits and a pair of runs scored.

On the mound, Murray pitched all eight innings, allowed eight hits and four runs (all earned), struck out seven and walked seven to drop to 11-6 this season.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow, April 14 when they travel to NCAA Division II Ursuline College for a non-league doubleheader at 1:00 p.m., on Monday, April 15 in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania for a non-league twinbill versus Geneva College at 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday, April 16 for a make-up OAC doubleheader versus Capital University at 3:00 p.m., at Heidelberg University in Tiffin on Wednesday, April 17 for two games with the first at 3:00 p.m. and a home doubleheader against The College of Wooster on Thursday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
