UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team fell to cross-town rival John Carroll University, 5-3, in the first game of an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bracken Field. Game two is set to begin in 20 minutes.
BW is now 19-16 overall and 4-9 in the OAC. John Carroll improves to 23-8 and 12-4 in the OAC.
The Blue Streaks capitalized on two Yellow Jacket errors in the bottom of the second to score two runs on no hits with one walk.
Sophomore All-OAC shortstop Brittany Lightel (Tallmadge) broke up the no-hit bid in the top of the fifth inning and senior right fielder Alyssa Brown (Hudson) followed with a base knock of her own. After a sacrifice bunt by freshman Angelina Ciraci (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Central Catholic), who made her first career at second base, sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Brua (Avon) delivered a two out and two run run-batted single up the middle plating Lightel and junior Melissa Vermes (Middleburg Heights/Midpark), who ran for Brown. BW would tack on another run as senior left fielder Ashley Elber (Huron/Edison) reached on an error and Brua scored.
John Carroll would tack on two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homerun to left field.
Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets had four base hits coming from Brown, Brua, Lightel and freshman centerfielder Jessica Chidsey (West Salem/Black River).
On the mound, junior All-OAC pitcher Tabitha Murray (Mogadore/Field) suffered the loss and now has a record of 16-8 on the season. Murray allowed five runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Yellow Jackets close the season with a non-conference doubleheader at Case Western Reserve University on Thursday, April 25 at 3:30 p.m. week before hosting Marietta College on Saturday, April 27 for an OAC doubleheader on Seniors' and Parents Day at 1 p.m.
