Men’s Tennis Sweeps Westminster (Pa.)

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team recorded its first sweep of the season, beating Westminster (Pa.) College 9-0. 
 
Almost 48 hours after the team's last match over Grove City (Pa.) College, the Yellow Jackets (3-0) hit the road to take on Westminster (0-3) for their first and only dual match on the road during their abbreviated fall schedule. 
 
Senior Alex Papke (Federal Way, Wash./Thomas Jefferson) and sophomore Intercollegiate Tennis Association Jake Elbin (Findlay) defeated their Titan opponents at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1. Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference, Academic All-OAC and ITA Scholar Athletes Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) and Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) at No. 1 doubles and junior ITA Scholar Athlete Roger Boyer (Medina/Brunswick) and freshman Michael Benotti (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) at No. 3 doubles had tougher matches with Boyer/Benotti winning 8-4 and the juniors winning 8-5. 
 
In singles play, Boyer walked off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 double bagel of his opponent at No. 4 singles. Polifrone and Elbin both won by scores of 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, while Harris at No. 2 singles and Benotti at No. 5 singles each won 6-2, 6-0. Papke faced a tougher test at No. 6 singles, fighting off Collin Kelly in the first set 7-5 before cruising 6-1 in the second set.
 
After three dual matches and playing in the Oberlin Invitational last Saturday, BW will travel to Kalamazoo, Michigan, to compete in the ITA Central Region Championships hosted by Kalamazoo College next weekend, Friday through Sunday, September 29 through October 1 to wrap up the fall season.
