Men’s Tennis Finishes Fall Schedule at ITA Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team competed at the three-day Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region tournament to wrap up the fall portion of the 2017-18 schedule.

Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference, Academic All-OAC and ITA Scholar Athletes Matt Harris (Akron/Revere) and Dominic Polifrone (Hudson) represented the Yellow Jackets (3-0) in the main draw in both doubles and singles. While both juniors fell in the first round of the main draw, Harris and Polifrone each notched a couple of wins in the back draw.

In his first round main draw match, Harris lost 6-0, 6-1 to Mitchell Thai of Denison University before moving into the back draw to take on Matthew Gittings from Oberlin College. Gittings proved to be tough competition in the first set, winning in a tiebreak 7-6(3) but Harris rebounded, getting a couple of breaks to even things up with a 6-2 second set. The junior then won the 10-point third set by a score of 10-8. Harris eventually lost to Daniel Kinas of DePauw University in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.

Polifrone took on Siddharth Rajupet from Case Western Reserve University in his first round match of the main draw, losing 6-1, 6-1. The junior then met up with Miguel Vaca of Illinois College in the back draw and advanced by scores of 6-1, 7-5. Polifrone then beat Nick Pollock from Wabash College 6-4, 6-0 before losing to Brett O'Brien of Lake Forest College 7-6(6), 6-4.

In the doubles tournament, Harris and Polifrone played a competitive match against Jack Hibbard and Diego Venegas Vargas from Ohio Wesleyan University but lost 8-5, sending the juniors to the back draw of the doubles tournament. Taking on Lucas Pindak and Alex Kohlmeier, Harris and Polifrone easily advanced 8-1 before losing to Bernardo Neves and Radhakrishna Vishnubhotla of Washington University in St. Louis 8-1.

Harris, Polifrone and the rest of the Yellow Jackets will be back in action in February to finish off the 2017-18 season and compete for an Ohio Athletic Conference championship.
