Trio Earns OAC Football Player of the Week Honors

BEREA, OHIO -- A trio of Baldwin Wallace University football student-athletes, junior transfer wide receiver Cory Lanterman (Streetsboro), senior defensive end Joe Fitch (Elyria/Elyria Catholic) and junior cornerback/ kick return specialist Kevin Johnson (Maple Heights/St. Ignatius), have been named as this week's Ohio Athletic Conference Football Players-of-the-Week.  The trio received the honor by virtue of their performances in a 45-13 victory against Bluffton University last Saturday in Berea.

Lanterman, who transferred to BW last winter from NCAA Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania, caught three passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns to earn the OAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week award. He caught a 35-yard TD pass from senior quarterback Ryan O'Rourke (Avon) at the 10:42 mark of the second quarter to make the score 10-0 and grabbed a 20-yard scoring strike from O'Rourke with 2:02 left before halftime to make the score 24-0. For his efforts, Lanterman also received the BW Dick Miller Community & Family Day Most Outstanding Player Award. Last spring, he placed individually in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes and ran on the 4 x 400-meter relay team at the OAC Championship Meet.

Fitch took part in three quarterback sacks, including one on the first play of the game and 2.5 total in the contest to earn the OAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week award. He helped a BW defense that limited Bluffton to 111 rushing yards in 34 attempts, sacked the QB five times and forced three turnovers.

Johnson returned the second half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown to mark his second career kick return for TD was named as the OAC Special Teams Player-of-the-Week. He also had one tackle and a pass breakup on defense. Last spring, Johnson earned NCAA Division III All-America honors as a member of the Yellow Jackets' fifth-place 4 x 100-meter relay team at the national meet. He also placed fourth in the 100-meter dash and was a member of the OAC-champion 4 x 100-meter relay squad.

This Saturday, the Yellow Jackets travel to University Heights to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University in the 24th Annual Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy (BW leads that series, 12-11). The game will kickoff at Don Shula Stadium at 6:00 p.m. with BW leading the all-time series, 24-23-4, including a 45-37 win in Berea a year ago.
