27 BW Student-Athletes Named as Fall Academic All-OAC

BEREA, OHIO – Twenty-seven Baldwin Wallace University fall sport student-athletes have been named to the 2012 Fall Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference teams for the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball and football.

The 27 include three volleyball student-athletes, five from women’s soccer, eight from men’s soccer and 11 from football. The group also includes six repeat award winners, including volleyball student-athletes in senior middle hitter Rachel Switalski (North Royalton/Holy Name/3.634 grade point average in marketing) and junior middle hitter Colleen Bonacci (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls/3.806 GPA in exercise science); men’s soccer student-athletes in senior CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American forward Pat Brennan (Akron/Walsh Jesuit/3.757 GPA in Master’s of Accounting) and junior defender Judson Sprandel (Akron/ Green/3.913 GPA in biology and pre-med); and football senior student-athletes in linebacker Nick Milano (North Royalton/Padua Fransiscan/3.795 GPA in criminal justice) and safety Tom Goebel (Parma/Padua Fransiscan/3.692 GPA in business administration).

“We would like to congratulate each of our twenty-seven Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference selections,” said fifth-year BW Director of Athletics Kris A. Diaz. “Each young man and young woman is a dedicated and committed student-athlete and should be commended for representing BW, their particular team and themselves well.

“Each student-athlete excelled both in the classroom and on the athletics field and courts,” continued Diaz. “They managed their time well and helped the University have another outstanding fall season.  We are very proud of each of them.”

Switalski and Bonacci have been key members of a squad that has posted a 50-44 mark the past three years. Switalski will graduate as one of the all-time leading hitters in BW history with 838 kills. She is a 2-time All-OAC and Academic All-OAC choice who was second this season with 238 kills and 46 total blocks.  Bonacci has 428 career kills, including 91 this season, and is a two-time Academic All-OAC pick.  In addition, sophomore Alayna Chlad (Kent/Roosevelt/3.884 GPA in communication disorders) made the team for the first time. She had five kills in 10 games.

Brennan was one of six CAPITAL ONE Academic All-Americans during the 2011-2012 academic year.  He ended a brilliant four-year career fifth all-time in scoring with 72 points, was sixth all-time with 28 goals and sixth all-time with 18 assists. He also was 3-time All-OAC and twice has been both All-Ohio and All-Great Lakes Region. He led BW to 48-25-9 mark during his career, including a school-record 16 wins last season, a 16-6 record and the school’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III national tourney.

Sprandel has helped BW to a 35-18-8 mark the past three years and has been a key on a defense that has allowed less than a goal per game during his career.  He is a two-time Academic All-OAC choice and earned CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District 7 honors this fall.

In addition to the duo, sophomore defender Trey Arney (Coshocton/3.533 GPA in biology), sophomore forward Michael Brennan (Akron/ Walsh Jesuit/3.875 GPA in chemistry), sophomore forward Cody Smith (Brunswick/3.676 GPA in broadcasting and mass communication), sophomore midfielder Trevor Stankavich (Ravenna/3.583 GPA in exercise science), sophomore midfielder Mike Womack (Mentor/3.629 GPA in accounting) and sophomore midfielder Adam Lyons (North Olmsted/Ohio Connections Academy/3.878 GPA in philosophy) were honored for the first time.

Arney was a key defender for the second straight season. He played in 15 contests and scored one goal. BW allowed just 25 goals in 17 matches. Michael Brennan, younger brother of Pat, had three goals and one assist for seven points in 17 matches. He ranked fourth in shots taken with 20 and third in shots on-goal with 11. Smith also played in all 17 matches and recorded three assists for three points. He was third in shots taken with 24 and fourth in shots on-goal with nine. Womack played in all 17 matches, took six shots, including two on-goal, and had an assist. Stankavich played in two contests while Lyons did not see action in a varsity match.

Milano and Goebel were key members of a Yellow Jacket football team that finished 7-3 this season and has posted a 22-8 mark the past three seasons. Goebel played in all 10 games and was second on the team with 61 tackles, first with eight total pass breakups and tied for first with three interceptions. The honorable mention All-OAC player also forced one fumble and recovered another. Milano joins Goebel as a 2-time Academic All-OAC pick. He was fourth on the squad with 45 total tackles, including four for loss, and had four pass breakups and an interception.

In addition to the duo, junior wide receiver Gabe Adams (Hudson/3.594 GPA in economics), junior safety Zach Barley (Hudson/3.854 GPA in psychology), junior linebacker Dave Flegal (Akron/Revere/ 3.813 GPA in accounting), senior tight end Josh Masters (Akron/Archbishop Hoban/ 3.578 GPA in business administration), senior linebacker Corey Meeks (Wiloughby/Wlloughby South/3.756 GPA in criminal justice), sophomore running back Nolan Sordyl (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Twp./ 3.731 GPA in film studies), junior offensive center Zac Wojciechowski (Cambridge/3.838 GPA in early childhood education), senior offensive tackle Clayton Wolf (Parma Hts./ Padua Franciscan/3.691 GPA in accounting) and sophomore RB Sebastian Zuluaga (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast/ 3.595 GPA in sport management) are all first time honorees.

Adams was fourth on the team with 13 receptions for 211 yards for a 16.2-yard average per catch. Barley was third in total tackles with  52, tied Goebel for the interceptiuon lead with three and had three tackles for loss. Flegal had 22 total tackles, including three for loss, and a pass breakup. Masters was second with 16 catches for 183 yards and three touchdowns, including the game-winner versus Muskingum University in overtime. The converted-quarterback also completed his only pass for a 43-yard gain. Meeks had his best season at BW with 25 tackles, including four for loss and two QB sacks, broke up a pass and blocked a kick. Sordyl had his second straight solid season and ran for 147 yards in 34 attempts and tied for the team lead with four rushing TDs. He also caught two passes for eight yards. Wojciechowski and Wolf were key members of an offensive line that helped BW to average 32.4 points and nearly 370 yards of total offense per game. Wolf was a three-year starter. Zuluaga was BW’s top runner with 435 yards in 95 attempts with four TDs and he caught four passes for 16 yards.

The five women’s soccer selections include junior defender Kayla Losco (Hopewell Township, Pa./ Hopewell/3.528 GPA in pre-physical therapy), junior defender Emily Sanders (Canton/Jackson/3.528 GPA in pre-physical therapy), junior defender Margo Laseak (Mentor/3.693 GPA in early childhood education), sophomore midfielder Carly Norman (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin/3.827 GPA in early childhood education) and sophomore forward Ashley Stevens (Mansfield/Lexington/3.552 GPA in early childhood education).

Losco, Sanders and Laseak have led the Yellow Jackets to a 30-22-8 mark the past three seasons, including a fine, 12-3-4 slate this fall. Losco led the OAC in assists with nine and was second on the team in scoring with 13 points and earned first-team All-OAC honors.  She also was third on the team with 21 total shots, including nine on-goal. Sanders played all 19 matches and was a key member of a defense that allowed just 12 goals in 19 matches to lead the OAC at 0.61 goals-against-average and eight shutouts. She took two shots and had a pair of assists for two points. Laseak also played in all 19 matches and was another key defender. She took 10 total shots, including five on-goal. Stevens played in nine contests, took eight shots, including six on-goal, and had a goal and two points. Norman played in 13 matches and took three shots, including two on-goal.
