BW Women’s Lacrosse Wins at Capital

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University, 13-12, today at Bernlohr Stadium in its final regular game of 2014. The Yellow Jackets open Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament action on Wednesday, April 30.

With its win, BW is now 13-3 overall and 3-1 in the OAC. With its loss, Capital is 10-4 overall and 1-3 in the OAC.

The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman midfielder Sierra Thomas (Medina), junior attack Cara Wood (Shaker Heights/Lourel), senior attack Colleen Bodkin (East Aurora, N.Y.). Thomas tied her career-high with six goals and also had two assists. Wood scored three goals with one assist, and Bodkin added two goals.

Capital was led by freshman Kori Titus and sophomore Kim Hoerauf with four goals each.

BW took an early 2-1 lead at 19:20 in the first half when Thomas scored on an assisted goal from Wood. The Crusaders responded quickly with four unanswered goals with the last coming at the 8:10 mark when Titus scored her third goal of the game. 

The Yellow Jackets answered back with a goal from Thomas at the 5:40 mark to cut the lead to 5-3. BW then went on a 3-2 run with two goals from Wood and one from Thomas to narrow the gap to 7-6 going into halftime.

The Crusaders scored the first goal of the second half when Titus scored a goal at the 26:45 mark with an assist from Marlee McCloud to make it 8-6. The Yellow Jackets scored four unanswered goals from Wood, Bodkin, freshman attack Kelsey Johnson (Carmel, Ind./Park Tudor), and Thomas with the last coming at the 22:44 mark to take a 10-8 lead.

Captial came back to take the lead, 11-10 at the 11:40 mark with the third goal coming from freshman Shannon Walton. BW responded  and tied the game when freshman midfielder Maddie Russell (Lakewood/Rocky River) scored a goal with 6:18 left in the second half. The Crusaders took the led 12-11 after Walton scored her second goal of the game with 3:39 left. 

The Yellow Jackets made their last surge when Thomas scored the game-tying goal with 1:45 remaining and the game-winning goal with 1:29 left.  It marked the second straight game that BW won in the final 1:29. On Wednesday in Berea, Bodkin scored the game-winner with two seconds left in an 11-10 victory versus the University of Mount Union.

In goal, senior Bridget Walsh (Sheffield Lake/ Elyria Catholic) played 17:28 minutes, allowed 3 goals and made 3 saves. Freshman Gabrielle Nondorf played the final 42:32 minutes, allowed 9 goals, and made 5 saves as she improves to 2-0 overall.

The Yellow Jacket opponent and site of its OAC Tournament game is to be announced.
