Women's Basketball Team Wins Fifth Straight With a 73-48 Victory at Marietta

BEREA, OHIO --  Freshman guard Kristen Troyer (Dover/Garaway) and sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./Corry) each scored a career-high and game-high 13 points as the Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team won its fifth straight game as it defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College,73-48, tonight (Wednesday, December 15, 2010) on the Fenton Court in the Ban Johnson Arena in Marietta.

With the victory, the Yellow Jackets won their 32nd straight game over the Pioneers and improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the OAC.  With its loss, Marietta fell to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in the OAC.

In addition to Troyer and Frisina,  BW had two other players in double figures as senior two-time All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) and sophomore wing Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) each contributed 11 points.  Schroeder, who grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, remained in eighth place on the all-time Yellow Jacket scoring list with 1,099 career points.  The Pioneers were led by sophomore forward Aleisha Guiler scored 12 points.

In the first half,  BW opened the scoring when sophomore guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) slashed to the hoop and scored on the layup at 18:59.   The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 6-0 before Marietta cut into the lead  when junior forward Lizz Wilson buried a jumper at the 16:15 mark.

BW increased its lead to 16-4, when freshman guard Troyer scored her first two career three-pointers with the last coming at 12:55.   The Pioneers ended a three minute scoring drought, 20-6, when freshman wing Tori Dixon hit a jumper with 11:06 left in the opening stanza.

The Yellow Jackets outscored the Pioneers 27-16 over the remainder of the first half to lead 47-22 at the intermission. BW had its largest lead of the half of 26 points at the 2:21 mark when sophomore guard Frisina hit her third three-pointer of the period.

The Yellow Jackets first half success was keyed by the team shooting 50 percent from the field (18-36) and 58 percent from three-point land (7-12) Troyer and Frisina each had 11 points on a combined 8-9 (.889) from the field and impressive 6-of-7 (.857) from beyond the arc.  

In the second half,  Marietta got as close as 23 points with 50 seconds remaining as freshman wing  Chelsea Martin hit a three-pointer.  BW increased its lead to a game-high 33 points at 4:51 as Frisina hit a pair of free throws.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, December 18 when they travel to Lexington, Kentucky to play Centre (Ky.) College in the first round of the Transylvania (Ky.) The games are the January 29, 2011 twinbill versus Wilmington College and the Third Annual Take a Kid to the Game Day doubleheader versus Ohio Northern University on February 19, 2011.
