Softball Falls to La Verne (Calif.), Defeats No. 25 Chapman in California Finale

LA VERNE, Calif. – The Baldwin Wallace University softball team closed out its West Coast swing as it fell to the University La Verne by a final score of 6-1 and defeated No. 25 nationally ranked Chapman (Calif.) University by a final score of 6-5 inside the La Verne Softball Stadium.

In game one, BW (7-5) scored one run on seven hits as it plated its lone run in the seventh.  La Verne (4-7) scored six runs on eight hits as it pushed one run across the plate in the first, one in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth and two in the sixth.

At the Plate

  • Sophomore right hander pitcher Maddie Lester (Boardman) went 2-for-3
  • Senior Academic All-OAC center fielder Lexy Coggins (Vermillion/Firelands) went 2-for-3
  • Senior pinch hitter Grace Bowman (New Windsor, Md./Linganore) had an run batted-in (RBI) single in the seventh. 
  • Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC second baseman Emily Mau (Broadview Heights/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) went 1-for-3
  • Sophomore shortstop Lucia Wolford (McDonald) went 1-for-2 with a double and a hit by pitch

In the Circle

  • Lester took the loss as she allowed six runs on eight hits with five walks

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored six runs on eight hits as it plated two runs in the third and four in the fifth, including three off the blast by Lester. Chapman (7-3) scored five runs on eight hits as they pushed two runs across the plate in the first and three in the fifth

At the Plate

  • Mau went 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI
  • Senior All-OAC catcher Bridie Bricker (Brook Park/Berea-Midpark) went 1-for-2 with a double, run scored and a sacrifice                
  • Coggins went 1-for-2 with a run scored
  • Sophomore right fielder Macaira Fox (Massillon/Tuslaw) went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored, RBI and walk
  • Sophomore right fielder Steph Mraz (Strongsville) went 1-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI
  • Lester went 1-for-4 with a homerun, run scored and three RBIs
  • Freshman third baseman Mia Maddamma (North Royalton) went 1-for-3

In the Circle

  • Junior righty Marisa Hall (Paris/East Canton) earned the victory as she allowed five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk

BW is back in action on Wednesday, March 20 when it opens the home portion of its schedule with a non-conference doubleheader against Calvin (Mich.) University on the BW Softball Field at the Roehm Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
