Heil Gets Win 100 at BW; Men’s Basketball Sweeps the Blue Streaks

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball Head Coach Tom Heil notched his 100th career at BW as the Yellow Jackets swept the Ohio Athletic Conference season series against crosstown rival John Carroll University with an 88-77 victory on the Mike Moran Court inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. 

BW (14-8, 9-6 OAC) was led by junior All-OAC guard Anthony Mazzeo (North Canton/Massillon Jackson) with 24 points and six boards. Junior guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) added 17 points. Sophomore All-OAC guard Drew Wennes (Huron) scored 12 points and grabbed six boards. Junior forward Jackson Simmons (Wadsworth) added 11 points and seven rebounds.

John Carroll (7-14, 2-12 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC guard Jackson Sartain scored 13 points with four rebounds. Sophomore guard Connor O'Toole scored 12 points and had four boards. Junior guard Eric Hanna added 11 points. 

1st half

  • The Yellow Jackets opened the game on an 8-2 run with Simmons scoring six points.
  • The Blue Streaks responded with a 6-2 run of their own.
  • BW carried the lead the entirety of the first half.
  • The Yellow Jackets got their largest lead of the half with a 10-4 run to put them up 42-32.
  • The teams continued to trade baskets as BW carried a 52-42 lead into the half.
  • Mazzeo was the high scorer with 17 points in the half and team leader in rebounds with 5.
  • Sophomore guard Luke Driscoll (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) led the team with two steals.

2nd half

  • John Carroll started the half with a 14-7 run to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 3.
  • The Blue Streaks got their first and only lead with 13:42 in the half at 60-59.
  • BW regained steam and with an 11-3 run they stormed out to a seven-point lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets never looked back as they continued to their build on that lead.
  • With 6:01 left, Snyder nailed a three to give BW a 10-point lead.
  • The Yellow Jackets made some late free throws and walked away with a 88-77 victory.

BW returns to the court for their final regular season game as it hosts Capital University in an OAC and Seniors' Day game in the second game of a men's and women's doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
