Men’s Basketball Falls in Seniors’ Day Game against the Comets

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's basketball team fell in an Ohio Athletic Conference regular season finale and Seniors' Day Game against Capital University by a final score of 73-72 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

Before the tip, BW (14-9, 9-7 OAC) honored two senior student athletes forward Terrell Hicks (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) ang guard Shane Zalba (Mentor). The team also recognized senior student assistant Corey Jones.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Zalba who tied his career high with 17 points and had seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Junior guard Jake Snyder (Akron/Archbishop Hoban) added 17 points. Sophomore All-OAC guard Drew Wennes (Huron) contributed 15 points.

Capital (14-10, 9-8 OAC) was led by junior forward Joe Thompson who had 18 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Tyler Schreck added 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard David Sanford contributed another 15 points.

1st half

  • The game started off slow as the teams were tied 7-7 with 15 minutes left in the half.
  • Zalba get the scoring going with a putback layup.
  • BW used a 10-2 run to take a 19-13 advantage with 8:34 remaining in the half.
  • Sophomore forward Rob Watson III (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) hit a free throw with 1:27 left to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the half at 32-23.
  • The Comets closed off the half with the last three points to cut the BW lead to 32-26.
  • Zalba was tied for the most with Capital's Sanford at nine points.
  • The Yellow Jacket defense forced 10 turnovers on their way to a six point advantage.

2nd half

  • BW opened with a 7-0 run to get their biggest lead of the night at 39-26.
  • The Comets responded with an 8-0 run of their own.
  • A Capital 9-0 run gave them their first lead of the day at 55-52.
  • The game of runs continued as an 8-2 response by the Yellow Jackets gave them a three point lead.
  • Two clutch free throws by Snyder sent the game into overtime at 64-64.

Overtime

  • Wennes started the scoring with a three pointer.
  • More late free throws by Snyder gave BW a one point advantage with 13 seconds left.
  • A shooting foul with 0.3 seconds, sent Schreck to the line and he knocked down both to give the Comets a 73-72 win. 

The Yellow Jackets return to the court on Tuesday, February 22 when the team travels to Westerville to take on Otterbein University in an OAC Quarterfinal game. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. inside the Rike Center after Otterbein hosts an OAC Quarterfinal game on the women's side.
