Wrestling Team Defeats Heidelberg, 23-22, to Hand Student Princes Their First OAC Loss

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University wrestling team defeated six-time defending Ohio Athletic Conference champions Heidelberg University, 23-22, tonight (Tuesday, February 8, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins Center.

With the Jackets trailing 19-8, Scavuzzo pinned to make it 19-14, Georgian won to close the gap to 19-17 and Stoll had the match-winning pin to make it 23-19. And, although junior 285-pounder Ryan Jones (Uniontown/ Lake) lost 9-8 in a match that he was penalized for four points for stalling, he kept the Student Prince 285-pounder from winning the match. With its victory, the Yellow Jackets improved to 10-7 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the OAC and now have a seven-match winning streak dating back to December 22, 2010. BW was led by the pins from senior 174-pounder Andrew Scavuzzo (Cuyahoga Falls/ Woodridge)  in 5:12 and senior 197-pounder Tristian Stoll (Milan/ Edison) in 2:39. The Student Princes, who received a pin from Andrew Johnson and led 19-8 entering the 174-pound match, fell to 9-9-2 overall and 2-1 in the OAC.

In addition to Stoll and Scavuzzo, junior 125-pounderJeremy Dombrady (Copley) won by a 6-3 decision to open the match, senior 133-pounder Phillip Payne (Woodmere/Orange) won with a technical fall 18-3 in6:22 and sophomore Joe Georgian (Eastlake/Villa Angela- St. Joseph) scored a 3-1 decision.

"This was a good, solid team victory," said veteran Head Coach Rich Fleming. "Every one of our guys competed, wrestled hard and represented the College well."

"It was an exciting match that came right down to the final two matches," said Fleming. "Tristan continued to dominate his opponents (he has won 12 straight matches) and Ryan led most of the match and then held on and sacrificed an individual win to help the team earn a win."

The BW grapplers are back in action this Saturday, February 12 when they host a double dual match by facing nationally-ranked Ohio Northern University at 1:00 p.m. on Seniors' and Parents' Day. Then, the Yellow Jackets face OAC-rival Muskingum University at 6:00 p.m. in a match rescheduled from February 1 due to inclement weather.
