Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Otterbein on Seniors’ Day

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University women's lacrosse team took on Otterbein University in an Ohio Athletic Conference showdown. BW honored five senior student-athletes before the start of today's game: attack Sophia Caito (Solon), All-OAC midfielder Kaitlyn Hradek (Olmsted Falls), goalkeeper Maddie Hofmann (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls), Academic All-OAC attack Sophia Leuma (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson), and Academic All-OAC defender Lily Polen (Youngstown/Canfield). The Cardinals closed the first half on a 5-0 run and kept surging in the second half, defeating the Yellow Jackets by a 16-10 final score. 

BW (3-8, 1-2 OAC) was led by junior All-OAC midfielder Deanna Loukas (Tuckahoe, N.Y./Eastchester) as she totaled a team-high six points with four goals and two assists. She also came up with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman attack Carley House (Hilliard/Darby) notched a season and career-high four goals. 

Otterbein (5-4, 1-1 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC midfielder Emily Willms as she totaled a game-high seven points with six goals and an assist. She also added eight draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers.

1st Quarter

  • 14:34 – Otterbein got on the board first with a goal by Newkirk
  • 13:07 – BW tied the game 1-1 with a goal by House, assisted by Loukas
  • 10:41 – Cardinals' goal by Chappell
  • 9:06 – The Yellow Jackets tied the game 2-2 with an unassisted goal by sophomore attack Lauren Getchey (Perrysburg)
  • 8:31 – BW went up 3-2 with another goal by House (free position)
  • 7:24 – A goal by Loukas (assisted by Getchey) put the Yellow Jackets up two
  • 2:02 – Otterbein closed the first quarter with a goal by Newkirk

2nd Quarter

  • 11:51 –Leuma tallied a goal for BW, going back up two
  • 9:23 – The Yellow Jackets notched a goal by Loukas, assisted by Getchey
  • 8:30 – BW's House scored (free position), giving the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the game (7-3)
  • The Cardinals closed the first half scoring five unanswered goals (two by Willms, and one each by Fox, Rigel, and Newkirk), earning the 8-7 advantage 

3rd Quarter

  • 10:15 – Cardinals struck first in the second half with a goal by Newkirk
  • 9:53 – BW stayed within one goal after a score by House, assisted by Loukas (9-8 OTT)
  • 6:49 – Otterbein's Fox scored on a free position shot
  • 6:15 – The Cardinals tallied another unassisted goal by Willms
  • 1:56 – BW notched a man-up goal by Loukas, assisted by Conway (11-9 OTT)
  • 0:25 – Another Loukas/Conway duo goal was scored to bring the Yellow Jackets within one
  • 0:11 – Cardinals added one more to the board before the fourth (Willms) 

4th Quarter

  • 7:12 – The Cardinals halted the Yellow Jacket momentum with a free position goal by Willms
  • 5:50 – A goal by Otterbein's Newkirk put the Cardinals up four
  • 3:38 – Cardinals' goal by Fox (free position)
  • 1:45 – Otterbein closed the game with a man-up goal by Willms, assisted by Fox, holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless in the fourth, and clinched the 16-10 victory

Hofmann started and played the full 60 in the net for BW, notching four saves.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 5 when the team travels to Oberlin for a non-conference matchup against Oberlin College. The game is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Dick Bailey Field inside of the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.
