ADA, Ohio – The No. 10 nationally-ranked Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team faced Ohio Northern University in an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup. The Yellow Jackets escaped Ada with a huge overtime team victory by a 64-58 final score.
BW (16-3, 13-1 OAC) was led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) as she notched 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block. Edwards went 10-10 from the free throw line. Senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) tallied nine points and five rebounds.
ONU (14-6, 8-5 OAC) was led by junior All-OAC guard Brynn Serbin as she notched a game high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Jaidyn Hale tallied 11 points.
1st Half
- ONU opened the game with a statement first quarter, leading the Yellow Jackets by as much as seven points.
- A three-point jump shot by junior Academic All-OAC guard Regan Schill (Sheffeild Village/Elyria Catholic) brought it back within four points at the end of the first.
- The Yellow Jackets chipped away at ONU's lead, with a shot from downtown from senior guard Emily Lyon (Wadsworth/Highland), BW was down just two.
- A nice dish to the block from freshman guard Emily Irwin (Pickerington/Watkins Memorial) to sophomore forward Kira Philpot (Cuyahoga Falls/Stow) for the layup tied the game at 19-19 with 5 minutes left in the half.
- Senior Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky) knocked one down from distance to put BW on a 9-0 scoring run, and BW closed the half with a 30-26 lead.
2nd Half
- Polar Bears tied the game at 35-35 at the 4:26 mark in the third.
- The Yellow Jackets were being outscored in the third quarter before a 6-0 by Scheibelhut herself gave BW the 44-38 lead going into the fourth.
- Two free throws by Edwards at 9:19 in the fourth gave BW its largest lead of the night at eight points (46-38).
- ONU battled back to tie the game at 51-51 at the 1:42 mark.
- A block by Hensel on the buzzer-beating ONU shot sent the game to overtime.
Overtime
- Two more free throws by Edwards and another three from Schill earned BW the 58-53 lead.
- Keeping the lead at five, a layup by freshman forward Caely Ressler (Napoleon) forced ONU to a timeout with 2:19 left.
- With free throws back and forth, BW eventually claimed the big 64-58 win.
BW returns to action on Saturday, January 12 as it travels to New Concord, Ohio to play in the first game of women's and men's doubleheader against Muskingum University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. on Performance Court inside the Anne C. Steele Center.
