No. 14 Women’s Basketball Advances to OAC Tournament Semifinals with Victory Over Muskingum

BEREA, Ohio – The No. 14 nationally-ranked and second-seeded Baldwin Wallace University women's basketball team hosted seventh-seeded Muskingum University in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Fighting Muskies by a final score of 91-42 in the Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.

BW (19-4) was led by senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC forward Lilly Edwards (Dublin/Coffman) as she posted 20 points and nine rebounds. Four other Yellow Jackets reached double-digits including sophomore forward Kira Philpot (Cuyahoga Falls/Stow) with 14 points and six rebounds, sophomore guard Carolyn Wochele (Mentor) with 11 points, freshman forward Bella Vaillant (Perrysburg) with 11 points, and senior Academic All-OAC guard Megan Hensel (Upper Sandusky) with 10 points. 

Muskingum (10-15) was led by senior guard Tanner Wirth as she finished with 13 points.

1st Half

  • Scoring was kicked off with a three from Hensel.
  • Muskingum battled back to go up two (11-9) with a three-pointer at the 3:56 mark, grabbing their first and only lead of the contest.
  • An old-fashioned three-point play in response by Philpot gave the advantage back to BW.
  • The Yellow Jackets went on an 8-0 run to end the quarter, leading 20-11.
  • Trading basket-for-basket in the second quarter until another three from Hensel at the 5:13 mark gave BW a huge 35-17 lead.
  • A layup by Wochele extended that lead to 22 points (41-19) with 1:38 left in the half.
  • BW held a 43-19 advantage at the break. 

2nd Half

  • Senior Academic All-OAC forward Megan Scheibelhut (Avon Lake/Elyria Catholic) kicked off scoring in the second half with a shot from downtown.
  • BW held the Muskies to just free throws for the first four minutes of play.
  • The Yellow Jackets outscored Muskingum 22-9 in the third.
  • Another dominant quarter from BW clinched the huge statement team win by a 91-42 score. 

BW shot 32-68 (47.1%) as a team from the field and held the Muskies to just 13 field goals in the contest. The Yellow Jackets were dominant from both ends of the basketball tonight outrebounding Muskingum 48-26 and forcing 14 turnovers while only turning the ball over just four times. BW also grabbed seven steals to Muskingum's zero.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, February 24 as they host the University of Mount Union in the OAC semifinals. Tip-off against the Purple Raiders is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Ursprung Gymnasium.
