Baldwin-Wallace Softball Team Splits Twinbill at Wooster

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College softball team split a doubleheader at host The College of Wooster today (Tuesday, March 30) in a twinbill that was originally scheduled to be played in Berea but was moved to Wooster due to wet field conditions at The Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Field.

The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 4-3, but dropped the nightcap, 4-2.  This also was the start of eight games in four days for B-W. With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 8-5 overall and play host to Notre Dame College (Ohio) tomorrow, Wednesday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m., travel to Delaware, Ohio to play Ohio Wesleyan University for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 1 at 3:30 p.m. and end the week by hosting its Ohio Athletic Conference opener against Marietta College on Friday, April 2 at the Fairgrounds Field at 3:00 p.m.  With its split, Wooster is now 11-9 overall.

In the first game, B-W grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior shortstop Mallory Kobak (Independence) singled, stole second, moved to third on a balk and scored when junior leftfielder Chelsea Saunders (Medina/ Highland) grounded out. The Jackets would increased their lead to 4-0 in the sixth when senior third baseman Megan Coyne (Valley City/ LaGrange Keystone) singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored via a single by junior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) and a throwing error. Resek, who reached second base via the error, scored when sophomore CF Meredith Fogg (Sandusky/ Senior) singled. Fogg then reached second via a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman RF Morgan Brasee (Wellington).

Wooster would make the outcome interesting by scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning, but sophomore pitcher Sarah Baker (Mentor/ Lake Catholic) recorded the final out with a Fighting Scot runner on first base.

At the plate, Kobak led the way with three base hits, a run scored and a pair of stolen bases to improve to 15-of-15 in steals this season. In addition, Coyne and Fogg each had a pair of base hits as the Yellow Jackets had 11 safeties in the contest. On the mound, Baker scattered 12 hits, allowed three runs (all earned), struck out three Wooster batters and walked two others as she improved to 6-2 this season.

In the nightcap, B-W again gained a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first as Kobak led off with a walk, stole second for her 16th theft of the campaign, moved to third on a single by Saunders and scored when junior catcher Tanya Davis (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) hit a sacrifice fly. The Fighting Scots took the lead for good with a four-run fifth. B-W tallied once in sixth on a homer by Coyne, her second of the season, to make the score 4-2, but it was not enough.

At the plate, Saunders and Fogg led BW with two hits each.  On the mound, junior Mackenzie Rohrbacher (Sandusky/ Senior) started and pitched all seven innings, allowed seven hits, four runs (only one earned), struck out four and walked one. She was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-3 overall.

Following its doubleheader against Marietta this Friday, B-W resumes its schedule on Thursday, April 8 at non-league foe Ursuline College in a 3:30 p.m. twinbill and next week by playing twice at OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University on Saturday, April 10 at 1:00 p.m.
