Beard Collects 1,000th Career Kill, Men's Volleyball Splits in Road Doubleheader

HIRAM, Ohio - Senior All-Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League outside hitter Michael Beard (Hilliard/Darby) collected the 1,000th kill of his career as the Baldwin Wallace University men's volleyball team defeated Hiram College by a score of 3-2 and fell to No. 9 nationally ranked Juniata (Pa.) College by a score of 3-0 in a non-conference doubleheader inside Price Gymnasium.

BW (6-8) took down Hiram (8-7) in five sets by set scores of 19-25, 29-27, 25-20, 21-25, and 17-15. The Yellow Jackets were then defeated by Juniata (10-4) in straight sets by scores of 14-25, 24-26, and 23-25. After the tri-match, Beard and senior All-MCVL setter Brandon Long (Hinckley/Metea Valley [Ill.]) were named to the All-Tournament Team. 

at Hiram 

  • Beard finished with 12 kills including the 1,000th of his career in the third set making him the first player in program history to reach the milestone
  • Freshman outside hitter Owen Huynh (Loveland) finished with a statline of 13 kills, three digs, two solo blocks, one block assist, and five service aces for a team-high 20.5 points
  • Sophomore libero Aiden Kim (Bothell, Wash./North Creek) recorded a team-high 15 digs
  • Long tallied 39 assists and 11 digs
  • Junior All-MCVL right-side hitter Michael Devlin (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) also added seven kills in four sets of play 

vs. No. 9 Juniata

  • Sophomore Academic All-MCVL middle hitter Josh Steinitz (Towson, Md./Friends School of Baltimore) had a team-high 1.5 blocks with seven kills
  • Kim led the defense once again with six digs
  • Freshman outside hitter Daniel Latham (Westerville/Westerville Central) picked up nine kills, five digs, and two aces
  • Long added another 32 assists
  • Junior middle hitter Reed Fisher (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge Area) also contributed five kills
  • Beard grabbed another 10 kills and four digs

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, March 1 as they host the MCVL conference opener against Adrian (Mich.) College at 7 p.m. in Ursprung Gymnasium inside the Lou Higgins Center.
