Men’s Tennis Defeats Marietta 7-2 to Begin 2021 Season

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace University men's tennis team started the 2021 season on the right foot, besting Marietta College in an Ohio Athletic Conference match by a score of 7-2 on the Pop Collins Tennis Courts.

BW (1-0, 1-0 OAC) took a 2-1 lead after doubles.  The Yellow Jackets took first doubles as the tandem of sophomore Trey Kernan (Penfield, N.Y.) and senior Michael Benotti (Pittsford, N.Y./Mendon) won  by a score of 8-1.  BW jumped out to a 2-0 lead when senior Jonathan Brunnet (Berea/Berea-Midpark) and sophomore Mateo Gonzalez (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville High School South) captured No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-2.

The Yellow Jackets took five of six singles matches.  Kernan earned the win at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Benotti took No. 2 singles with scores of 6-2 and 6-0.  Sophomore Anthony Tosatto (Creston/Norwayne) won No. 3 singles by identical scores of 6-0. Brunnet triumphed in No. 5 singles with scores of 3-6 and 6-4 and 12-10 in the tiebreaker.  Gonzalez earned the No. 6 singles match with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.

BW is back in action on Wednesday, April 14 when it hosts an OAC match against Ohio Northern University at 3:30 p.m.
