HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.: The Baldwin Wallace University women's tennis team shut out a pair of NCAA Division II opponents, Clarion (Pa.) University and Millersville (Pa.) University today (Tuesday, March 8, 2011) on the third day of its annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina.
With its wins, BW improves to 6-6 overall. The Jackets dominated their match versus Clarion by winning 97 of 123 total games, including 72 of 89 singles games and 25 of 34 doubles games. With its loss, Clarion is now 2-8 overall.
BW gained a 3-0 advantage in doubles against CU as the number one tandem of senior number one singles player Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/ Columbus Bishop Hartley) and sophomore No.2 player Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/Elyria Catholic), won 9-7; the duo of junior No.3 singles player Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) and senior No. 4 player Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) won, 8-1; the No.3 duo of freshman Morgan Baker (Vermilion/ Elyria Catholic) and freshman Whitney Yoder (Medina/ Senior) also won, 8-1.
In singles play, BW swept all six matches as Pecinovsky won in a super tie-breaker at No.1 by scores of 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-6); Mittler won at No.2 by the scores of 6-4, 6-0; Greene won at No.3 by the scores of 6-0, 6-0;Pelosi won at No.4 by the scores of 6-0, 6-2; senior Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) won at No.5 by the scores of 6-0, 6-0; and freshman Laura Teigeler (Perry) won at No.6 by the scores of 6-1, 6-0.
Against Millersville, now 2-3 overall, BW won all three doubles matches. The Yellow Jackets earned wins at No.1 from Pecinovsky and Mittler by the score of 8-5, at No.2 from Greene and Pelosi by the score of 8-4, and at third doubles as Marshall teamed with Baker to win 8-1.
BW swept all six singles matches all via straight sets as Pecinovsky won at No.1, junior Safaa Hajji (Rabat, MOROCCO/ Ryad Al Maarifa) was victorious at No.2, Mittler at No.3, Greene at No.4, Pelosi at No.5, andMarshall at No.6.
BW closes its spring trip with an 8:00 a.m. match versus Elizabethtown (Pa.) College tomorrow.
The first spring northern matches will take place on Saturday, March 26 when BW hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Capital University at 1:00 p.m. All matches are played at the �Pop� Collins Courts on the BW campus.
