BEREA, Ohio- The Baldwin Wallace women's lacrosse team opened its season with a high-scoring back-and-forth affair in a 19-17 victory behind junior All-OAC attacker Brie Martineau's career-high seven goals against non-conference opponent Centre College (Ky.) Saturday night.

BW (1-0), in addition to Martineau's efforts, was led by junior midfielder Savanna Jaekle (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), who added four goals and an assist to the Yellow Jackets victory. Sophomore midfielder Maddie Ray (Cuyahoga Falls/Akron Revere) had three goals and an assist and senior All-OAC midfielder Megan Patrick (Ravenna/Kent Roosevelt) put away three goals to help in the win.

Centre (1-2) was taken charge by sophomore midfielder Mary Katherine Hardy, who scored five goals for the Colonels. Freshman midfielder McKenna Hulette and senior midfielder Hannah Hardy each added four and three goals, respectively.

With a quick start to the game, Centre college opened the scoring in the first two minutes of action followed shortly by a goal from Patrick to open the scoring for BW. Centre regained the lead just 12 seconds later after scoring two more goals. A goal from Jaekle got the Yellow Jackets back on track and Martineau opened her season goal account shortly after. Another Jaekle goal at the 21:00 mark gave BW its first lead of the game, followed again by a goal from Martineau to bring the score to 5-3. Down but not out, Centre responded with two goals of its own to tie up the game just eight minutes later. The deadlock didn't last long as a second Patrick goal took back the lead for the Yellow Jackets, quickly followed by a goal from Ray to extend it. Centre quickly regrouped and went on a 5-1 run from the 12:00 to 6:33 mark to take control of a 10-8 score line. A late Jaekle goal closed out the scoring for the half just a minute later.

BW came out of the half-time firing as Jaekle, Ray and freshman midfielder Sid Chamberlin (Wooster) added to their goal tallies in the first three minutes to flip the lead back in BW's favor, 12-10. The lead was short-lived as Centre tacked on two goals in a quick response to going down and tied things back up. At the 20:53 mark senior attacker Mackenzie Moran (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) scored her first goal of the season before it was quickly matched by a Centre goal to keep the score line even. In the ensuing 12 minutes, goals were exchanged between BW and Centre at four-apiece to culminate at a score of 17-17, courtesy of three Martineau goals and one Patrick goal for the Yellow Jackets. The back-and-forth ended after another Ray goal gave BW its first lead since the beginning of the half with 6:53 left in the game, followed by Martineau's seventh goal.

The Yellow Jackets will next play when they host Oberlin College in a non-conference matchup on Thursday, February 28, at 7:00 p.m. inside George Finnie Stadium.
